Leadership of the crew involves training, coaching and refereeing. Yes, if you want to be the captain of a fishing boat with paying passengers, you need a USCG captain’s license. To be a fishing guide for up to six passengers, you can obtain an OUPV/Six-pack captain’s license. To be the captain of a ship with more than six paying passengers, a Master license is necessary.

Becoming a boat captain can be a time-consuming but rewarding process. A captain’s license isn’t necessary if you just want to take your own boat out for pleasure cruises, but it is required if you receive any compensation for your boat services. For boats larger than 65.6 ft: On Federally controlled waters, every vessel 65.6 ft. (20 meters) or larger in length must carry a whistle and a bell. They must be audible for 1 nautical mile.
An anchor and chain may help in an emergency. If you can keep yourself anchored to a single point, it will be easier for authorities to find you. An anchor with enough chain should be kept aboard all recreational boats.
