Human beings have a thing or two for fast things, be it cars, jets, bikes, anything at all, as long as it’s fast and boats cannot be taken out of that list. People have heavily invested in fast cars, for example the highly successful Tesla Model X, or perhaps some Kawasaki Ninja sports bike. Human need for speed has never been swept under the rug, and it’s not likely to be; for the next couple of decades at least.

The Bluebird K7 once also held the record for the world’s fastest speedboat when it managed to maintain a top speed of 276 mph. Designed by Donald Campbell who died trying to record a speed of 300 mph with the same boat, beating his own record in the process but that didn’t quite happen. Not many boats can achieve that speed feat.

The Spirit of Australia is best known for setting the World Unlimited Water Speed Record and is not the kind of boat that you can go buy. This boat was made by a man named Ken Warby. He designed the boat on his kitchen table and he built it in his backyard, so he could only work on sunny days. He studied engineering when he was growing up and used that knowledge to make his boat very aerodynamic. He had a really low budget, which meant he could only buy wood and had three power tools; a drill, circular saw, and belt sander. The rest was done with hand tools. The most expensive parts of the boat were the three Westinghouse J-34 jet engines which cost him $260 total. Those engines were some of the most powerful at the time producing 3,000 pounds of thrust per engine. He kept revising his design over and over again until it was ready. He even took six centimeters off the rudder the night before the world record test to reduce drag. more

Water was flying as the Spirit of Australia raced across the Tumut River on October 8th, 1978. This boat is known for its name and for setting the World Unlimited Water Speed Record. There are many world records but one of the most exciting and dangerous is the speed of the fastest boat in the world. Inside this record there are multiple smaller records for different types of boats such as sailboats, powerboats, speedboats, hydroplanes, and catamarans. The Spirit of Australia is a speedboat and is almost 30mph faster than the second fastest boat pulling off a speed of 317.59 mph! To understand why this boat is so fast you first have to learn how it was built, its history, and why its competition has never beaten it.

The current World Unlimited Water Speed Record is 318 mph (511 km/h) and was set in 1978 by Ken Warby. His boat was the first to ever go past 300 mph and not crash. Up until that time, all the record breakers were American, Canadian, Irishman, or British and Ken was the first Australian. Although the World Unlimited Water Speed Record is the current fastest worldwide water record, there have been many other water speed records before the World Unlimited Water Speed Record. Before 1911 all the fastest speeds were achieved by steam-powered or propeller-driven vehicles. Since 1940 the approximate failure, or death rate of those attempting the unlimited record is 85%! The rules for the World Unlimited Water Speed Record include taking two runs in opposite directions, to make the speed official, because of wind variables or chop. Ken’s first run was an astonishing speed of 307.18 mph and his second run was 328 mph, with the official record equal to the average of 317.59 mph. Since then there have been two attempts at breaking the record, and they have both been fatal, showing how high the risk is. Ken was the only man to design, build, and drive a boat to the ultimate speed while the previous record holders had other people build or drive their boats. here
