Ever thought about getting a cheap inflatable for the gear?

If you have enough seats, 3 grown-ups & 4 small kids is probably within the 6-pax limit.

Sounds like a fun trip. don't forget the hamburger buns. or the bug spray. or the sun screen. or the extra lantern mantles. or batteries. . more

Oh yeah, only do this if you need extra space for your gear. Not for bringing along extra people!

Realistically your boat could be overloaded with just 5 obese people, put 5 300 lb. people on there and you're over the max. cap.

Have a great day & take ALL wakes from passing boats bow into them.
Putting on life jackets for all the seniors is advisable because there will probably not be enough time to find & put the jackets on them as they sink or drift away & sink. here

They do NOT HAVE TO PROVE ANYTHING .
You HAVE TO DO WHAT THEY TELL YOU TO DO. Spolied adult brats get themselves arrested & the boat seized. here

Capacity plates should never be removed, altered, or tampered with. While it is not a Federal violation for a boat owner to exceed the listed capacities, many states do have statutes prohibiting the carriage of people and gear in excess of the stated capacity, or the installation of a motor that exceeds the recommended horse power limit. Also, you may void your insurance policy if you are found to have exceeded the limits stated on your capacity plate. here

The terms loading and capacity relate to the weight of people, fuel and gear that can be safely carried. The safe load of a boat in terms of people depends on a number of characteristics, including hull volume and dimension, the weight of the engine and, if an outboard, how is it mounted. The number of seats in a boat is not an indication of the number of people it can safely carry. Capacity plates can generally be found on the inside transom, or next to the helm station.

Under the U.S. Coast Guard Federal Boat Safety Act of 1971, boats less than 20 feet powered with an inboard, outboard, or stern drive engine manufactured after November 1, 1972, must display a capacity plate defining the safe load limits. This plate must be mounted where you can see it when preparing to get underway. Sailboats, canoes, kayaks and inflatable boats are exempt from this standard states do have statutes prohibiting the carriage of people and gear in excess of the stated capacity, or the installation of a motor that exceeds the recommended horse power limit. Also, you may void your insurance policy if you are found to have exceeded the limits stated on your capacity plate. [links]

Also keep in mind the limits defined on capacity plates apply in good to moderate weather conditions. In rough waters, keep the weight well below the limit. In ideal weather conditions, it is recommended that you distribute your load evenly, keep weight low, and avoid abrupt changes in distribution. This is especially important if your boat’s capacity is fully used or if weather conditions deteriorate. It is also important to remember that people represent a "live" load and moving about affects a boat quite differently than static loads. In general, shift human or other weight only after stopping or slowing. [links]

If you don’t know the volume of your pontoons use this tool to work it out using the height and length measurements of the pontoon tube. more

For this reason many pontoon boat owners use the 20% rule. They will either subtract 20% from the weight capacity number or add 20% to their load number. In my opinion it is easier to simply add 20% to the load and in that way you can see how close you are to the maximum. here

Pontoon boats are almost always used on freshwater, inland. Freshwater weighs about 62 pounds per cubic foot of water. We will use this information to help determine the weight capacity of your pontoon boat.

Remember, do not try to reach the maximum weight capacity of the boat. A change in weather, a freak wave, or even the wake of a bigger boat could turn a heavily loaded pontoon boat and tip everything, and everyone, into the water. Use the 20% rule mentioned above.

I am fairly new to boating so this may be way off but it is my understanding that older boats weren't required to have capacity plates so that may be why you don't have one. You should be able to obtain one by getting in touch with the manufacture of the boat though.

I ordered a custom engraved brass plaque from OfficeMax and it works well as a capacity plate. It was raw brass, so I clear coated it with a couple coats of lacquer. [links]

Thanks. I'm not exactly sure about the age and manufacturer. I think it's a 1976 Browning. Im in NJ. I'm pretty sure anything under 20' is required to have a capacity plate. If this boat doesn't require one because of it's age, I'll be a happy man :0)
