In general, yacht transport that exceed these dimensions and weights will require additional efforts, engineering judgment, and coordination between the yacht transporter, DOT, District Offices, and local authority for each state.

People often need to transport a yacht across our country and for international yacht shipping. Boat and Yacht Transport specializes in yacht transport with an emphasis on oversized and yacht transport moves.
A Yacht Transport Permit is needed if, in addition to exceeding the legal limitations, the dimensions and/or the weight exceed additional pre-defined limitations. [links]
This method of delivery is the one in which it can be hardest to predict timescales. Granted, in benign summer weather it might be relatively quick, but there’s plenty of scope for unseasonal weather to force a number of successive days in port. Prices can vary widely, with much depending on the experience of the skipper. Payment tends to be on a per mile basis, although in some cases a per day basis will be quoted. [links]
Understanding your options for boat transport could open up your boat buying options. How best to deliver your new boat, or move your existing one, to a new location?
In some cases this can be the most efficient method of all and is applicable to yachts of up to a very surprisingly large size. Anyone who doubts this only needs to look at the choice of location for one of Europe’s largest boat builders, Bavaria Yachtbau. The factory, which builds craft of up to 56ft, is in Southern Germany, more than 350 miles from the nearest sea. Yet the location works for them, as it’s broadly as easy to deliver a boat to a customer in the Mediterranean as it is to Northern Europe or the UK.
Sailing the yacht on her own keel is perhaps the most commonly considered option. To some extent, the larger the boat the more likely the direct costs will favour this solution, as the delivery will be quicker and the boat more able to withstand inclement weather. On the other hand, smaller and older boats can be more difficult to deliver by sea, as they may be significantly slower – and less reliable – than a larger and newer boat. here
It’s also a very viable option for transporting a boat shorter distances, where the costs of loading onto a truck, or a ship, might be a significant portion of the overall costs. Drawbacks of this method include wear and tear on the vessel – a long trip carried out to a deadline can find the weaknesses of even the most well found and well maintained vessels, especially if it takes place out of season. This can be a particular problem for those buying second hand vessels whose systems may not have been thoroughly tested, although it has to be said that new vessels are not immune from problems. Boat delivery skippers need to be sure the vessel is in a sea worthy condition before the voyage starts – expect them to spend a significant amount of time checking the boat out. here
All year round we get requests from boat owners that need oversize boat shipping permits. It’s not an easy task by any means what-so-ever. If you’re an individual you’re honestly way better off having someone file for them. We provide this service under some circumstances (dimensions primarily ) but prefer to work with individuals that are not in a rush. Why you may ask? It’s a very hard process. One that doesn’t make us much money. If you’ve already transported in the states you plan on traveling in you know. However, it is a lot easier for us to process them for you. However, no matter what your situation is we are also here to assist you in getting it done the proper way the first time around so you’re not paying twice (provided once again you are not in a rush). So if you’re looking to save money by pulling your boat behind your pickup truck yourself you’re in the right place. Keep reading…

Different states have different rules for shipping boats. Basically, anything that is over 102″ or 8′ 6″ wide and/or over 13′ 6″ in height is required to obtain a permit in ANY state/province in order to be legally transported no matter how short or long of a distance you are traveling if it is on a public road it must be permitted. For those feeling “lucky” there are a few things you may want to consider:
Here are some examples of what we consider Big Boat moves, sometimes HUGE, utilizing travelifts, cranes, trailers, trucks, custom block setups, cradles, etc. The individual posts and photo galleries give you some insight into the scale of these large boat transport projects, and should give you some assurance that we can handle your boat, too. Whether it’s a heavy hauling job or not. Have questions? Check out our FAQs page.
Once upon a time there was a retired fisherman. He had the dream of building his ideal fishing trawler with woodwork to die for. His design was based on a classic Monk design. He set upon his task deep in the redwood forests of northern California. 5 years and many cups of coffee later, the …
This was a monster. We had moved it just about a month before, as a finished hull, to a new location to be fitted out and deck put on. Now it was time to get it in the water. The scale of this thing is difficult to grasp until you see the guys on ladders …
When shipping a boat from marina to marina, please choose a marina or boatyard with at least 14′ overhead clearance, with no low tree branches or wires on its approach. Legal loaded height is 13’6” which is the overall height from the ground to the highest point of the boat while on our trailer. Usually, if the boat height is 12′, we are within the legal height limitations. Don’t worry if you measure your boat and it is over 12′ high. In most cases, the removal of a flybridge, radar arch, or bow pulpit on a sailboat will bring the boat down to legal limits. Boats that load out over 13’6” high may need additional escorts, route surveys, police escorts, etc. in order to be compliant with the oversized permits issued and to ensure the safety of your vessel.
Boats that have a beam of over 8’6” wide are considered an “oversize load” and will require permits in every state that we travel through. We will obtain these permits and include these costs in your quote. Vessels that are over 12′ wide may require a “certified escort” or two, depending on its size and the state being traveled through. This too is an additional charge that will be included in your quote. The only time you will run into extra charges is if we are re-routed by the state when ordering the oversized permits. This will happen when there is road construction or other detours that will not allow your boat to go on that particular road due to size or weight. When we are re-directed by the issuing Department of Transportation and additional mileage is added to the trip, you will be charged per mile over and above the mileage quoted in your contract for this particular transport.
