I spooled up the 46's standard 710-hp Caterpillar C12 diesel inboards and pushed the single-lever Cat controls forward 'cause it was time to fly. The smooth throttle movement was only rivaled by the easy rise of the 46's solid-fiberglass planing hull, whose lines come courtesy of New Zealand's Crowther Design. The vessel came up on plane before she reached 1500 rpm and quickly accelerated across Smokehouse Bay off Marco Island, Florida, to an average top speed of 40 mph while burning only 72.8 gph. (That averages out to about 12 gph less at WOT than several similar-size monohulls I've tested.) The speed and fuel efficiency were immediate clues of why Black Pearl's founder, Mark Brunsvold, opted for a twin-hull boat. "I had a 65 [sportfisherman], but I didn't like burning 130 gph to go fishing," he told me. That's understandable, as this fishing-fanatic-turned-boatbuilder, who originally intended to build a boat for just himself, added that he enjoys extended fishing expeditions that keep him and his crew a couple hundred miles from shore. With 680 gallons of fuel available on the 46 and a fuel burn of only 46 gph at her respectable 34.8 mph cruise speed, this boat is mostly about range and ability.

The Black Pearl 46's impressive turn of speed, agile handling, and efficiency have earned her two thumbs up from this boater. And while she has some stiff competition from the monohull market, especially with her relatively compact lower-deck accommodations, the 46's main-deck space is relatively larger. Add to her list of pros an uncatamaran-like profile, and she'll definitely turn heads of many traditional diehards and maybe even convert some to cat lovers. [links]

Fishbox capacity aside, the allure of 180 square feet of uninterrupted fish-fighting space was almost too much to resist. This is the place to dance with pelagics, and her 18'2" beam makes it possible (similar-size monohulls average about two and a half to three feet less beam). Even with the optional Release fighting chair, there's room for a stand-up angler to work a fish. If you prefer to fish with stand-up gear, I'd add coaming padding to save your knees some bruising, as my test boat didn't have it. In addition, while I appreciate Black Pearl's use of cockpit lighting, the lights protrude from under the gunwale and could possibly cut your legs if you're working a fish. Brunsvold says that subsequent hulls will have flush-mount lights. Some other fishy highlights of my test boat included a 55-gallon transom livewell, four rod holders, six rocket launchers, and 33-foot Rupp outriggers. more

It is seen that many galleons carried a lateen sail on the mizzenmast; if the Pearl does, it can't be seen. But the state of the sails, the heavy decorations, the gun decks, the oars? With as much canvas as a galleon would carry, if she was built light and thin she would go fast. The English galleons were said to be the most mobile of their heavily armed warships -- after all, it was the English galleon that defeated the Spanish Armada, because the Spanish galleons were too large and sluggish to defend themselves well. So, at the very least, we can leave it at the fact that the Pearl is most likely a full-rigged ship. But what about the lovely style of her body? She's obviously quite large; she was nearly half-again the size of the Interceptor, if not twice as big. She's quite heavily ornamented, compared to sparse beauty of the Interceptor; and if her sails weren't in tatters, she'd carry a lot of canvas. The Interceptor had only one gun deck; the Pearl had at least two, plus an excess of oars (never really had a chance to try and count them). Just from that information alone, it's obvious that the Black Pearl was built with destruction in mind. more

She is a warship; and not just any warship, but most likely a galleon. Now, not all galleons were particularly large - take the Golden Hind (the first English galleon to circumnavigate the world), for instance, which was only 86 feet long from the bowsprit and displaced 100 tons. The Interceptor - played by the Lady Washington (lovely image here , which I got from this entertaining site) - is 112 feet long from the bowsprit and displaced 195 tons. more

A good description of a galleon is this: more

But galleons were meant for carrying cargo, most say. Not so; the galleon was originally built as a warship, which made them the perfect ships to carry and guard the expansive treasures of the Spanish Main. After all, what fool would put hundreds of thousands of pieces of gold on a ship and not have that ship heavily armed? The Mayflower, for instance, was a style of galleon (though incredibly small - only 65 feet long), as were the English ships that defeated the Spanish Armada in the late 1500's (like the Ark Royal, the Revenge, and the Victory; English galleons, all). Fully loaded, a galleon would no doubt be incredibly sluggish, as the Spanish galleons were said to be - but laden with only the regular cargo and the compliment of sailors, they would no doubt fly. here

And this ship is the French galleon Couronne, launched in 1636, and in my opinion this one looks the closest to what we could see of the Pearl during the movie. She was a bit smaller than the Lowe, at 150 feet, but could carry up to 638 men - half again what the Lowe could carry. But again, even a ship this size could be piloted by a fairly small skeleton crew - the standard compliment of British ships consisted of four watches (which would be more than a skeleton crew each - at least 30 men for 4 watches totals 120 men at the smallest), and the rest of the men were mostly soldiers. 638 men on the Couronne would be incredibly cramped. This one, however, is full-rigged, whereas the Lowe has a lanteen-sail on the mizzenmast. As stated before, it's not easy to tell whether or not the Black Pearl has a squaresail or a lanteen-sail on the mizzenmast.

Barbossa and his crew continued their pirate activities in the time that followed. One night, while sailing through the coast of Hispaniola, the Black Pearl was suddenly attacked by the Queen Anne's Revenge, the ship of the notorious pirate Blackbeard. The Pearl was peppered by cannonfire from the Revenge. The sea beneath the Pearl began to roil while the Pearl itself was pitching and yawing to where the ship itself couldn't be maneuvered. Witnessing all of this tempted Barbossa to give the order to abandon ship. But it was too late, as Blackbeard used his sword to turn the Black Pearl against the crew. Every plank, rail and spar aboard the Pearl began to creak a hellish noise as the rigging came to life: the Pearl, though not of her own volition, had turned on her own crew. Barbossa's crew were tangled by the ropes, unable to fight as they were wrapped around like snakes. One of the ropes would wrap around Barbossa's right leg. Not wanting his fate changed, Barbossa used his sword to cut off his own leg. Barbossa was able to escape the rest of the attack, but with the knowledge of having lost the Black Pearl, and his right leg, to Blackbeard. [4] [links]

Following their escape from the locker, the crew of the Pearl sailed to a small island in order to stock up on fresh water. Jack and Barbossa led the party on land, while Will Turner stayed on board the ship along with Elizabeth and most of the crew. Once on the island however the Pearl was ambushed by the Empress, and command was handed over to the East India Trading Company, thanks to Sao Feng's deal with Lord Beckett. However, Barbossa convinced Feng to aid the crew, and the Pearl launched an attack on the HMS Endeavour while Feng fled. Jack and Barbossa were free to command the Pearl once more and made for Shipwreck Island. Journeying to the island, and through the Devil's Throat, the Black Pearl arrived to Shipwreck Cove, where Jack and Barbossa would meet with the other Pirate Lords. [5] here

Will Turner and the crew of the Pearl ultimately crossed paths again 8 years later, following the Pearl's attack on Port Royal. Two of the cursed crewmen, Pintel and Ragetti, captured Turner's love Elizabeth Swann, who had the final cursed coin in her possession at this point. Because of this, as well as Elizabeth's introduction as "Elizabeth Turner", Barbossa believed that she was the child of Bootstrap Bill, who could help lift their curse. And so, Elizabeth was "welcomed" aboard the Pearl for the journey. A few days later, the cursed crew brought her to Isla de Muerta, where Barbossa began the ritual to lift the curse. However it failed, and so the crew realized that Elizabeth wasn't the person they needed.

Jack immediately resumed his captaincy, though found competition in the form of the resurrected Hector Barbossa. His crew was bolstered by Tai Huang and his men, who pledged their allegiance to Sparrow. The Pearl sailed through the seemingly endless doldrums of the Locker, encountering Weatherby Swann and many other dead people in boats along the way. Jack later deciphered the cryptic clues of Sao Feng's navigational charts, and devised a plan to return the Pearl back to the land of the living. He and the rest of the crew tipped the Pearl upside down by rocking her back and forth, assisted by the cannons and cargo shifting below decks, allowing the crew to escape the Locker heralded by a green flash. Aside from her striking visual features, the Pearl was believed to be extremely fast, at least by those who knew of her existence. In fact, when she sailed with the wind, she was the fastest ship in the Caribbean, indicating that her speed may be derived from the large amount of canvas she carried. [8] Under Barbossa and his cursed crew, galley-style oars, or "sweeps", were a primary method of boosting the Pearl's speed when going against the wind or pursuing very fast prey. [2]
