Just installed a BYO 787 from SES. Do I need gasket sealer on the exhaust manifold gaskets at both ends ? They sent me nice 1.50mm gaskets and are a lot better than the paper ones that I have used before that have failed and killed motors.

I've never put gasket sealer on any gaskets on these engines except the cases mating surfaces where it call's for that. But for what your doing. Just dry is the best. [links]
NO!
Any excess will get stuck in the water jacket or splooge out the side.
Technically speaking Mercruisers go on dry. Volvo wants you to use a product called copper coat. Although for many years Volvos went on dry as well. Personally I would not use copper coat on a Mercruiser as the gasket material is different, and I don't know how it would react.
you do not remove anything from the new gaskets, should you wish to do anything ,take a good flat file and dress both surfaces flat. new does not mean flat.
Personally ,I use Perma-Tex Aviation sealant
Re: Sealer on riser gaskets? [links]
I've heard of folks employing a hi temp RTV on the riser/manifold joint. While agreeing that the joint surfaces should be dry and, clean, and flat; that isn't always the case. Somtimes you can clean-up the surfaces, but that still doesn't cure all the ills of pitting, corrosion, etc. If I had an unlimited budget, sure, new parts. Unfortunately, we all must live within budgetary constraints. [links]
Re: Sealer on riser gaskets?
Nope. It ain't practical to file the head. the manifold is up to you. more
the 60* motors use orings the rest so far still use gaskets. I am with DP. use the brown stuff and it does not leak here
Steve, several years ago when the use no sealer head gaskets came out,we were told at an OMC service seminar to still use the 'brown stuff'.
I do.I haven't had a replaced gasket fail EVER!

I know that is strong, but I had to say it.

I work on a few OMC V6's,but usually spark probs.

Don't they have "o-ring" heads?

DHP here
I dont know about the warning but is it normal to use a sealant on head gaskets?
When I replaced a head gasket on my 40hp Evinrude last year the local dealer I bought my parts from recommended coating the gasket with the OMC gasket sealer. This guy has a good reputation and his marina/family have been selling Johnsons since the beginning of time. I trust his opinion. I don't like the idea of dry gaskets anyway. here
hello
the omc adhesiveM now 3m super weatherstrip adhesive is a hardning permmanent adhesive. great stuff in its intended applications. I use it on seal OD's and exhaust cver gaskets when called for. sealer 1000 is very similar but thinner, no body, runs almost like water.perfect seal and gasket maker are a paint on sealent that does not dry hard. has many many uses.
the oring 60* motors, I still get scared when trying to just silly cone them . but it seems to work just dont use any substace with copper. the nickle/tin antisieze is fine. mostly I just use marine grease. but I to paint the head bolt threads and shanks with perfect seal.
good luck and keep posting [links]
Having a tough time finding our tried and true BRP 508235 gasket sealant. Possibly discontinued?
A few online sites have mentioned that it is now be replaced by a non generic version from Loctite part number 1525607.
Has any tried the Loctite, and is it indeed the same stuff?

I haven’t used the Loctite brand sealer but I have used the Permatex Aviation Sealer in a pinch and don’t really like it much. The BRP sealer is hard to find now so I’ve switched over to the easier to find Mercury/Quicksilver Perfect Seal which is similar to the BRP stuff. here
