I had small engines and if you have any distance to go you need to be able to plane out which means no less than a 9.9.

I appreciate all replies but I especially appreciate ones like yours.

I have a 15' glass '60s runabout. Heavy as sin (they all are). my 30lb electric will push it marginally, really tough in wind.

Well, if you want to be sneaky, you can get an 8 hp motor and slice the "8" decal in half to make it a "3 hp" motor. It's a bit of a dirty tricky though. I agree that a little vintage, twin cylinder, 3 hp Johnson/Evinrude is a great little motor. I have a single cylinder air cooled Tanaka/Gamefisher kicker on my boat that works great, but it's awfully loud. [links]

5hp outboard motors are relatively low in power, and are often matched with small, lightweight boats. Some boats that are commonly used with 5hp outboard motors include inflatables, canoes, and fishing boats. A 5hp outboard may also be carried on a sailboat as a backup in case the winds fail. Certain 5hp outboards can also be good trolling motors on slightly larger vessels.

Many inflatable boats are a good matches for 5hp outboards. These boats are usually very light, which can allow the low powered 5hp motor to move them through the water very quickly. Rigid inflatables are also typically light, so a 5hp outboard can often be a good choice for them as well.

Some 5hp outboards have two stroke motors, while others use a four stroke cycle. The two stroke units are typically better suited to operating at low engine speeds, so they can often be used as both the main and trolling motor for smaller boats. Four stroke outboard motors can have advantages as well, though they often operate better at higher speeds. A four stroke 5hp outboard might be better suited for use as the trolling motor on a larger vessel, where it would be able to operate at a normal speed without moving the boat too quickly.

What size of HP?
Thanks to their light weight and exceptional lift, inflatables plane with lower power outboards. To determine the correct motor HP size for your boat, follow the recommended power output:

NEVER USE A MOTOR POWER HP HIGHER THAN INDICATED ON THE MANUFACTURER'S I.D. PLATE AS THIS COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF CONTROL

- Fully tighten the brackets (2) by hand and check that they are still properly tightened after 15 minutes of running. more

We have hopefully given you an idea of the size of some of the more common inflatable boat options out there. If you are transporting these craft physically we strongly advise you go and check them out first however. If you are buying a craft you know will be trailered or moored then that is lesson of an issue, although length may still be an issue.

These small outboards can push small boats up to 3 to 10 kilometer per hour depending on power, boat design, weight, and current. [links]

They are unlikely to have have gears though some may have a speed setting and reverse. The whole outboard commonly rotates 360˚ which is good for short maneuvers in reverse. The small outboards are relatively lightweight and have a carrying handle. [links]

Engines in this range will drive most hulls at 15-20kmh with 1 to 2 persons or light to moderate load. They are a great choice for trolling motors, auxiliary outboards, and yacht motors on medium boats [links]

In this range, the engines will propel most hulls at approximately 10 to 15 kilometers per hour depending on load and draft. these engines are reasonably lightweight, easily transported, compact and many have forward-neutral-reverse gears. [links]

Inflatable Fishing Kayaks: These are up to 12ft in length and up to around 80lbs in weight, more with gear. If you keep this inflated it may be that you need a hand trolley to move this around. You can pick these up fairly cheaply. They also don’t weigh too much so you can pack them up and put them into the kayak. We have an article on the best inflatable fishing kayaks on the site. more
