You have recently bought a boat, and it won't be long before you are enjoying adventure on the high seas or relaxation on the local lake. But first be sure of your state's laws concerning boat titles and registration. Almost all states require that boats be registered with the government, but titling requirements vary by state.
Oklahoma was the first state to require all boat owners to have their boats titled, passing this condition into law in 1959. Nevada and South Carolina followed suit in 1972 and 1974, respectively. It wasn't until the 1980s that Illinois, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Utah, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin adopted this law as well.
A handful of states have specific conditions for boat titling, similar to Michigan's "permanent engine" stipulation. California and Maryland require a boat to be titled only if it requires registration as well. A Kentucky boat requires a title if it is used in public, but it is exempt if used only in private waters. In Indiana, a boat needs to be titled only if it fits one of the following scenarios: it was bought before January 1986 by a citizen of Indiana; it is treated as a lifeboat for a ship; it is valued at less than three thousand dollars when new or it was built for private usage and will not be sold. here
Smaller vessels like sailboats, a ship’s lifeboat, or a boat that is propelled by oars or paddles do not have to be registered with the state. Make sure to do some research or ask a state representative on what sorts of water toys do not have to be registered in your state. here

In some states like California, New Jersey, and New York, you can register your boat with the state agency that handles driver's licenses or motor vehicle registrations. Other states, like Texas, require boat owners to register with the Department of Parks and Wildlife. Keep an eye out as to which office handles all of the state’s boating matters.

Applying for an outboard motor title will vary for each state. Each state requires different types of requirements or documents that needed to be submitted while titling. You can’t use a title in your state, which is titled in other states. So, make sure you are using the title that is issued in the state where you are living.
If you don’t have a title for an outboard motor, then you can’t prove that it belongs to you. While selling it, you may get any problems. If you are living in a state where it requires a title, then you should have it. Otherwise, you may face any issues if the coast guard inspects your boat.
