Roger, you have again taken the time to share your low cost houseboat building ideas, and I want to say thanks on behalf of all our readers since this is priceless information. here
I've cut the old fiberglass roof off a houseboat and installed an aluminum composite roof in it's place and it was great, since it insulated the roof and gave us a place to sit as we put rails up added seating and we had another deck to use. here

Price wise, it's probably more money than the typical standard exterior wall construction materials presently used, however when you factor in all the benefits and advantages, I'm sure in the long run, cost wise, just the life span of composite panels alone, will pay for themselves many times over.

I'm building a houseboat, and am looking at my choices for exterior materials, like composite panels for the walls or roof?
I know that if we were building a houseboat, and if my wife and I had to choose, we would go for composite panels, since my wife doesn't care about all the technical details, she just wants a houseboat that looks good, and that is easy to wash and keep clean. :)
It does not have to be only aluminum composite, it can be any type of lightweight composite panels.

* IMHO I would not touch a steel boat due to the resale and insurance problems. However if you have to do it I would look for a Lazy Days or RiverQueen as they were far and away the best built steel houseboats, they could take a hit, and are more seaworthy than most.
* Many Nautalines, early Chris Crafts and some orphan brands exhibit a humping of the floor in the galley area. This is due to rotting and failure of the stringers and bulkheads and is usually not economically repairable. This is especially true if the condition is long term and the bottom of the hull is hogged.
