The Boston Whaler 170 Montauk has always been one of the biggest successes of the American shipyard, which manufactures thousands each season. Year after year, this boat has almost become a symbol, but it was time to update it and Boston Whaler did not do things only halfway.
In this 2018 version, the 170 Montauk doesn’t lose its soul, but better than this, it gains in modernity, in modularity and it is now able to offer a larger and more family program. On top of that, it takes advantage of the popularity of the brand and a rating that remains high in the second-hand market. It’s difficult to do better in this category.
Not surprisingly, the appearance is very good, the building very serious and the hardware is robust. For example, you can find a semi-framed cleat on the front, beautiful navigation lights and many supports for the fishing rods. Of course, the hull is foamed and the weight attests that Boston Whaler did not go to the economy. The equipment is pretty complete for a unit of this size since it even incorporates the tank and if this is not enough, the list of options allows to largely customize the boat by changing the color of the hull or adding a solarium, a livewell, a cooler and even few teak parts. The Montauk models manufactured by Boston Whaler are the Montauk 150, the Montauk 179, the Montauk 190, and the Montauk 210. The 150 measures 15 ft in length. The 170 is 17 ft long, the 190 is 19 ft long and the 210 is the largest coming in at a length of 21 feet. [links]

Look for any sign of the foam layer being exposed through the top layer. It’s identified as a tan color, and if this is the case, look for evidence of water seepage. This is particularly important for the portions of the boat that are beneath the waterline. Also assess the condition of the wood. Each Boston Whaler boat is made of fine grade teak and mahogany wood types. If some of the original wood is rotting, it will need to be restored and this type of repair can be expensive. Also check the condition of the trim because this can either add or subtract value. Also inspect the boat to ensure that the bottom is painted, check the canvas accessories if there are any, inspect the electrical wiring, and make sure that any modifications have been added correctly. here

In 1954 Dick Fisher, a Harvard graduate, read an article on a brand new type of material called polyurethane foam. He likened it to synthetic balsa wood because of its stiffness and light weight. It was also very buoyant. Mr. Fisher had been toying with the idea of building light weight boats for some time and the introduction of this light weight foam opened up some opportunities. Fisher first built a small sailing dinghy using the foam covered with a fiberglass skin. His goal was to build small sailboats that would compete with the Alcort Sunfish later to become the AMF Sunfish.
In 1996 the company was purchased by Brunswick who also owned Mercury Motors and Sea Ray Boats. Bruswick paid a mere 27 million for the entire company. To give you an idea of how cheap this was consider that Bruswick paid 110 million for Igloo Coolers and 425 million for Sea Ray Boats. (10 years earlier) You may recall that Boston Whalers started to show up on showroom floors equipped with Mercury outboards. That is around the time Bruswick purchased the company. Overall, Brunswick has done a good job with the company. They run multiple shifts at the main plant to keep up with demand. The only classic design left is the 11 foot model. All other models have been redesigned but still have that original look to them. They also continue to be unsinkable just like the original.
In 1989 the company was purchased by Reebok. That’s right. The shoe company. The era of expansion and improvement came to a screeching halt. The classic hulls were still made but new designs came out and the company spent a great deal of effort marketing the new designs. Customers were resistant to the new designs and this coupled with the recession of the 90s took a toll on the company. At the end of 1993 Reebok sold the company at a 25 million dollar loss to Meridian Sports. [links]
