This generation of Datejust watches retained the 36mm case diameter of its predecessors; however it was marked by a number of subtle design updates that accompanied the new generation of movement. While the crystals on the 160xx generation of Datejust watches are still made from acrylic, the sloped “pie pan” style dial from the previous generation is gone, and replaced by one with a completely flat surface, much like the dials that Rolex still uses today. more

Unlike many of Rolex’s other iconic watch lines, the Datejust was not specifically designed or intended for one particular sport, environment, or lifestyle activity. While the Submariner was built for SCUBA divers, and the Daytona for race car drivers, the Datejust is simply a classic and reliable wristwatch, with a timeless and versatile aesthetic, that was designed to be worn everyday, throughout a wide variety of activities. here

By the late 50s, Rolex had introduced their Caliber 1560 movement, which would usher in a new generation in the form of the reference 160x series. By this point in time, the general appearance of the Datejust was more-or-less set. The “Datejust” name had become a permanent fixture on its dial, and other features such as the hands, bezel, hour markers, and crystal (with cyclops magnification lens) took forms that are still very much present on the modern Datejust watches that Rolex manufactures today.

Additionally, when the Datejust made its debut, it was fitted with a new style of bracelet - the Jubile, which was designed specifically for the Datejust. Originally, the “Jubilee” name was considered for the watch itself (as it was released in celebration of Rolex’s 40th anniversary); however it ultimately ended up only being used for the five-piece, metal-link bracelet that has been an option on Rolex Datejust watches ever since. here

While the Datejust is not the Rolex collection most known for pulling in six-figure sums at auction, arguably no other watch has played a greater role in the widespread and enduring success of the Rolex brand than the humble and beloved Datejust. For nearly three quarters of a century, the Datejust has served as the backbone of Rolex’s catalog, and for many people, the Rolex Datejust in the only watch that they will ever need.

Today, the Datejust continues to be one of the brand’s most popular and highly sought after models. It’s available in three different metal options, including stainless steel as well as two-tone and yellow gold. Over the years, there have been four different bezel options for the Datejust. The model is currently available with a smooth or gem-set bezel. In addition, there’s the option for a fluted bezel in the 18-karat gold variation. Previously, Rolex offered an engine turned bezel for the Datejust. However, the brand discontinued this style in the early 2000s. In addition, there are just two bracelet choices for the Datejust: the original, dressier Jubilee and the sportier Oyster. [links]

The initial variation of the Datejust II first launched in 2009. Ultimately, it helped to bring the collection into the modern era. The design was sportier than the original Datejust. It featured an Oyster bracelet and lume on the dial for increased legibility. It also showcased a larger size, upgrading from the standard 36mm of the Datejust to a more contemporary 41mm.

Today, the Datejust II is only available in the pre-owned market. If you’re looking for a new model, this might not be the right choice for you. On the other hand, if you want a rarer model that’s no longer in production, the Datejust II is a great option. Then, it comes down to size. If you prefer larger and more modern proportions, the Datejust 41 or Datejust II are both handsome watches. However, if you’re looking for a more modest size, go with the straightforward Datejust. For watch nerds, there’s always the movement to consider as well.

Nearly 65 years after the brand debuted the now-iconic Datejust, they gave it a facelift and unveiled the Datejust II . The second coming of the Datejust brought some modern upgrades. However, it still draws inspiration from the classic model that started the flagship collection.

First released in 1945, it marked forty years of Rolex timepieces. Today, it holds a spot in even the most exclusive collections, and remains one of the most popular timepieces among both men and women.

The Rolex Datejust is without a doubt one of the most emblematic watches of the Rolex Collection. Maybe more than the sporty Submariner, that is of course a great piece of history. But the Datejust is the essence of a Rolex: simple, reliable, rock-solid, very well made and designed as a Rolex should be in the collective psyche. Our friends of WatchTime wrote a comprehensive history of this icon that needed to be shared with you here.

At the beginning, one of the main characteristic of the Rolex Datejust was missing: the date magnifier. It is only in 1954, after nine years of production, that Rolex introduced the so-called Cyclops lens. At the beginning only yellow gold was available. Then Rolex decided to introduce rose gold, steel or two-tone editions. The bezel was also slightly different at that time as, instead of the fluted design, Rolex was using a coin-style bezel. more
