The title of the world’s largest boat is one that obviously changes quite frequently. New boats are constantly being built, and boat makers are constantly pushing the envelope of size. For the time being, though, the largest seafaring vessel by size ever built is the MV Mont (formerly the Knock Nevis). At a massive 458.45 meters (that’s 1504.10 feet), the boat is over a quarter mile long; it is 68.8 meters (225.72 feet) wide. The MV Mont’s gross tonnage is 260,941 tons, and its capacity is 564,763 deadweight tonnage. This is the highest deadweight tonnage of any boat in history. The boat was built in Japan in 1979 by Sumitomo Heavy Industries.

Though the Knock Nevis is the largest ship by size, it is not the largest ever by gross tonnage. That honor belonged to members of the Batillus class, four of which were built (Batillus, Bellamya, Pierre Guillamat, and Prairial). Prairial, the last remaining ship in the class, was scrapped in 2003. Ships in this class had around 275,000 tons in gross tonnage. here

It was so large, with a 24.6 meter (80.7 feet) draught, that it couldn’t pass through many of the world’s major shipping passages: the Nevis could not sail through the Suez Canal, the English Channel, or the Panama canal. The ship was capable of a sixteen knot speed, powered by steam propulsion. The ship has been renamed the MV Mont by its current owners, who have deliberately beached the ship and intend to junk it.

The list of the top ten largest sailing yachts in the world is not easily disrupted. The 109.5 metre Sea Cloud, which saw service in World War II, has held the title of the largest sailing yacht in the world since it was delivered in 1931. The 106.7 metre Oceanco-built yacht Black Pearl swept into second place in 2018 with its instantly recognisable black sails and Dynarig set-up, while the three-masted Lürssen yacht Eos has sat undisturbed on the list since 2006. But last year, in 2020, there was a new entry as Sea Eagle II took to the water. The Royal Huisman-built yacht, previously known as RH400, features exterior design by Mark Whiteley and naval architecture by Dykstra Naval Architects. Read on to discover our official list of the largest sailing yachts in the world. here

Sea Cloud was designed by Cox & Stevens and built as Hassar II by Friedrich Krupp in Kiel, Germany for Edward F Hutton and heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post. Following their divorce, Marjorie kept the yacht and renamed her Sea Cloud. Then, after serving during World War II, Sea Cloud was owned by the Dominican Republic dictator Rafael Trujillo, who renamed her Angelita, then by Clifford Barbour, who renamed her Antarna. The yacht was rebuilt in 1978 by new German owners, who changed her name back to Sea Cloud. Sea Cloud has 60 crewmembers and 32 guest cabins and is available for luxury charter all year round. here
