The Pirates of the Caribbean films are estimated to be set in the mid -18th century. More specifically, they are believed to be set in the late 1740s- early 1750s. There are contradictory elements in all of the movies, probably because of the poor knowledge of British and colonial history on the part of the creators. For example, some of the period clothing worn by characters was in-vogue in the 1600s.Some of the leaders such King Ferdinand VI were not born until the early 1700s. The type of Union Jack Flag flown in some of the scenes in the film was not created until after 1800. The biggest problem that many people have with the date being assumed as the mid to late 1700s is that it contradicts many of the events taken place in the life of Queen Anne. The specific date for the film is very confusing because of this.

Frankly for a fictive text I'd just run with the simple post-renaissance - pre- (extensive) british empire time-frame adopted by most, its nearly as recognised now as the 'generic arthurian' setting and so you can likely get away with it. [links]

It is best to assume it is in the mid-1700s because most of the actual historical people mentioned in the film were most active during the mid-1700s. Period fashion is commonly mistaken in films. This is why it is best to not rely on the dress of the characters as historical markers. Even if the creators understand what type of clothing the cast ought to wear, the costume designers and wardrobe staff might not understand fully. They also have room to be creative (and sometimes inaccurate.) The best way to date a movie like this one is to listen very closely to current events the characters mention and then research when they took place. Most films will not provide an exact date using this method because most films have a couple of things that are historically inaccurate. It will, however, provide the best and most reliable date for the film.

As much as the Pirates franchise has suffered from increasing amounts of creative fatigue with just about every new installment, these films remain extremely profitable (the fourth movie, On Stranger Tides, grossed over $1 billion worldwide) - hence, Disney isn't giving up on the brand quite yet. Then again, as has been discussed in the past by the Screen Rant Underground Podcast team, there is still room for further, interesting, exploration of the Pirates universe that could help to get more people excited about seeing this property live another day.

Pirates of the Caribbean 5, which may or may not hold onto the previously-announced Dead Men Tell No Tales subtitle, has taken one step closer to becoming a reality, now that it has an official release date. again. The film was once scheduled to hit theaters in July 2015, but for reasons - like, the need for additional development time and budget trimming in response to Disney's financial loss on Lone Ranger - it was instead put back on the shelf, with tentative plans for the film to arrive in Summer 2016 instead.

Disney now intends to release Pirates of the Caribbean 5 in theaters on July 7th, 2017, to be exact, which is currently not being claimed for any other major feature; the 2017 Fourth of July holiday frame will undoubtedly become more crowded, though, over the next couple years. For now, however, Captain Jack's new movie will open a week after Despicable Me 3 - which may draw away moviegoing families - and one week before the sequel to next year's Fantastic Four movie reboot is currently due for arrival. So why, then, is Johnny Depp's (Captain) Jack Sparrow's next adventure now not due for arrival until Summer 2017? Well, for one, after the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie was delayed, Depp filled up the empty space in his schedule with the gangster biopic Black Mass (which is currently filming), and it looks as though he'll jump right into making Alice in Wonderland 2 for Disney soon after the former project completes production. more

Walt Disney Pictures has officially set the fifth 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movie (starring Johnny Depp) to release in Summer 2017.

On a related note, with the Alice sequel already set to open during the 2016 Summer Movie Season, it makes sense that the Mouse House would instead save its other developing Depp-led tentpole for another summer - even if PotC 5 directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg had been able to make a 2016 date, that is. As it stands, the filmmakers (who made a name for themselves with the acclaimed indie sailing drama Kon-Tiki back in 2012) are currently preparing to begin shooting the next Pirates adventure during the first half of 2015 - according to producer Jerry Bruckheimer, anyway.

Generic historical period no'3. The context is a rough mismatch of several historical periods, as noted above. Providence Island didn't become Tortuga till quite late in the 17th century, while William Dampier and Exquemelin record evidence of pirate contact with asia after 1700; given that the singapore pirates would give them the time of day in these films it is likely to put the time frame closer to the very end of the 18th century and or the beginning of the 19th, as upon initial contact westerners were viewed as primitives by both the Chinese and Japanese empires, though I admit pirates as always with new cultures were more tolerated than most (just).

I would say around 10 years [have passed] probably, in the story. It has been almost six years since the last movie [On Stranger Tides] came out. Six or seven years. I think in the story, it's around 10 years, so things have happened.

Apparently Directors Tell No Tales, as well.

One reason why we also wondered if Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales could be a one-off that exists on a different timeline is the absence of iconic characters Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Turner (Keira Knightley). Both are rumored to return for this fifth installment, though when we pressed Joachim Rønning for confirmation, he side stepped our inquiries with aplomb.

The young Jack Sparrow scenes appear to be flashbacks, filling in the relationship that Sparrow has with new adversary, Salazar (Javier Bardem). Joachim Rønning confirmed to us that it IS Johnny Depp playing a younger version of his famous character, using digital wizardry (all the rage these days) to melt the years off of his facial features. Here, enough about me yammering about the trailer. Check it out for yourself right now. [links]
