Most gas line antifreeze is made up of mostly isopropyl or methyl alcohol. Alcohol has a very low freezing point, which makes it especially useful for this. However, it is important to recognize that most fuel sold in the United States already has ethanol alcohol blended with the fuel. Ethanol is blended in a mixture between 5 and 20 percent of most fuel. This means that adding additional gas line antifreeze could be an unneeded measure if your vehicle is generally operating in environments that are not extreme. [links]

With cold weather across the country, those little yellow bottles of gas line antifreeze are flying off shelves. Gas line antifreeze is a product that is only helpful in certain situations, however. here

Gas line antifreeze is a product usually added to a vehicle’s gas tank as a way to help keep the gas burning more cleanly. Most gas line antifreeze is some kind of alcohol, which binds to water in the gas line and gas tank and helps flush the water out of the tank and prevents it from freezing. Gas line antifreeze cannot defrost or clean an already-frozen gas tank, but it can help prevent very cold temperatures from freezing a tank.

Adding too much alcohol to the fuel in your vehicle tank can do damage to your vehicle. Given that there is such as high concentration of alcohol in gas, adding more doesn’t necessarily help. Alcohol is heavier than fuel, which means it sinks to the bottom of the tank, including the water that the alcohol has bound to. This mixture is combustible but not combustible as fuel. This makes an engine sputter and spit when the tank gets low.

CARS.COM — Subfreezing temperatures make life more difficult for motorists and the vehicles they drive, making cars harder to start — or even impossible to start if moisture in the fuel system freezes. One long-standing cure is to add gas-line antifreeze, an alcohol-based concoction that promises to keep the gas flowing in frigid temperatures.

But do you really need to add one of these fuel additives? Let’s take a closer look.

Water does collect in gas tanks and fuel lines from moisture in the air, or from the storage tanks at gas stations. Today, however, vehicles in most parts of the country burn gasoline that includes up to 10 percent ethanol, a form of alcohol that performs the same water-absorbing chores as brand-name gasoline antifreezes. Products like gas-line antifreeze Heet — which are available at automotive stores — contain ingredients such as isopropyl or methyl alcohol (methanol), but they function in much the same way as the ethanol that is already in your fuel. more

How many of us who drive every day know nothing about car maintenance? This important knowledge about your vehicle can have a huge impact on the way your car performs and its overall longevity.

The owner’s manual recommends changing your oil every 3,000 miles, but you can actually go much longer depending on how the oil looks when you check it. Ideally, the oil should be mostly clear and if it appears cloudy or dark, it might be time to get an oil change, or even tackle it yourself. Changing the oil is a simple process and fluid upkeep isn’t the only thing that should be done to keep your car in action. Checking that all your interior and exterior lights are working, making sure the air pressure in your tires are at the correct level, and maintaining your battery contacts are all good places to start.

One important questions that commonly arise in reference to new cars is whether or not antifreeze is needed. You may have heard that antifreeze in your gas tank, gas line antifreeze, and fuel line antifreeze are suggested in the winter time…but, is it necessary? Gas has an extremely low freezing point (far below zero) so it does not condense; however, condensation can collect in the fuel tank and cause a problem in certain situations. Most gas contains up to 10 percent ethanol and will work as antifreeze. more

The car we drove was equipped with standard 5-speed manual, a pleasant shifting unit though the 5-speed in the Escort GT we drove was a bit smoother. Automatic is a $390 option. The 1.9 is peppy enough so that automatic wouldn`t be a bad choice.

The XR-3 isn`t as quick as a 16-valve Toyota Mr-2 or as swift as a Chevy Cavalier Z-24 with a larger 2.8 V-6. But the XR-3 delivers far more pep and features much sportier looks than an economy Lynx while at the same time boasting an 24 city/32 m.p.g. highway mileage rating.

Most people don`t equate the 98 with being a performance machine. It might help if Olds gave the 98 with FE-3 a separate designation, like Pontiac`s 6000 STE or Chevy`s Celebrity Eurosport to let people know it`s a different car. Dietrick said for now it will just be called a 98. Too bad.
