Hmm. The problem is I am 'getting' directv as part of a park wide roll out for my condo association. I am paying for it whether I like it or not and my old TV service will be shut off. They will provide a 'free' SD receiver or a 'free' HD receiver. To get the HD one I have to contract for a year of upgraded HD service at an additional $10 a month. Yes that is $120 per year which is more than the cost of the box by itself (according to most online sales places) sold new. more

No, you cannot buy a new receiver and swap your old card into it. Yes, you can buy a new receiver and buy a new card for it (something like $20).
Beware of buying receivers on ebay and anywhere. Most people lease receivers and don't have the rights to sell them. DIRECTV will not activate a card for a leased box that is not with the original customer. If in doubt, you can call DIRECTV and ask for the Access Card department, check that the box is legit and disconnected correctly.
