You can stand at the shores and just marvel at the water, but don’t try to go in. There are guards everywhere and they will stop you immediately. Although they don’t tell you the reason we suppose it’s due to the still active salt production – they don’t want any contamination of the water.
As you can see you’ll be nearly alone on that road. The later the day gets, the higher the chances are that you’ll be completely alone with the flamingos. In the sunset hours there will be more and more flamingos closer to the shore and your chances of close-up encounters will rise.
If you want to spot the flamingos you’ll have to drive alongside the road at the shoreline of the Gulf of Mexico. This road starts directly behind the first pink pond at the Pink Lagoon and follows the coastline for at least 10 minutes.
After the left curve there will be one road going straight ahead to the village and a sand path turning right along a fence right next to the pink lake off of your right side. It might not look like an official road, but that’s the one you’ll have to take. You’ll probably be greeted by locals on their motorcycles right away. here
While there aren’t many things to do in Bacalar, it’s still a place you can easily while away the days. I spent my afternoons sipping Negra Modelos in a hammock overlooking Lake Bacalar, which is aptly named The Lake of Seven Colors. Though I think they’re selling themselves a bit short there — I counted far more than that.
Bacalar is a small town located about 5 hours from Cancun, 4 hours from Playa del Carmen or 3 hours from the other popular Yucatán hippie mecca of Tulum, popular destinations along the Yucatan Peninsula.
It’s a lake, and it’s the most beautiful lake I’ve ever seen in the world.
They only can survive in highly salty bodies of water in a few places on earth, and Bacalar — living up to its designation of “Pueblo Magico”, magic village — just happens to be one of them. Pretty freaking awesome. here
