Thanks for the reponses guys and much appreciated. I have tried moving the lever on the side of the switch and the float moves freely and isn't or wasn't stuck on so it must be shorting out. I took wiring apart to hook up a replacement Rule switch and can't figure out how to get connections out of the grey plug that they run into (see attached photo). Does orange piece come out with a good tug or will I break wires by doing this?
HotTeMolly: Are you able to send me a picture of the bilge that they sent you or describe the make/model. I think they now use bilge pumps with built in switches?

I have identified 3 ways I get water in the bilgeof my Triton 186 CC: [links]

2. Through the cable boot on the transom. In heavy seas this can also take on major water, but in light seas none at all. I put a couple of pieces of rubber
(from broken speargun bands) in with the cables and tightened the nylon tie to seal it better.

Possibly coming in from under the rub rails, a notorious spot and hard to seal. or the hull plug itself.

1. Through the access plate in the transom well. There is a post (by me) on this board about this problem. It can be a major problem in heavier seas when the
boat takes water into the transom well.

The only flaw is some of the Sea Hunt logos in the upholstery are coming apart at the seams, so there will be a little work to get it looking like new again.
