The Gulf of Thailand covers a total area of 320,000 km 2 and has a length of about 800 km and a maximum width of 560 km. The Gulf is relatively shallow and has a maximum depth of 85 m and an average depth of 58 m. Many notable rivers discharge their freshwater and sediments into the Gulf of Thailand which include the Chao Phraya River along with its distributaries the Bang Pakong, the Tha Chin, and the Mae Klong rivers. The Mekong, Nakhon Chai Si, and the Tapi Rivers also drain into the Gulf of Thailand. The strong inflow of waters from these rivers and the slow exchange of the gulf’s water with the South China Sea account for the low salinity of the Gulf of Thailand. more

Gulf of Thailand, formerly Gulf Of Siam, inlet of the South China Sea bordering Thailand (southwest through north), Cambodia, and southern Vietnam (northeast). The Gulf of Thailand is 300 to 350 miles (500 to 560 km) wide and 450 miles (725 km) long. The Chao Phraya and Nakhon Chai Si rivers enter the gulf near its head. The main harbours in Thailand are located along the Gulf of Thailand at Bangkok, Pattani, Songkhla (Singgora), Pak Phanang (port for Nakhon Si Thammarat), and Chanthaburi; in Cambodia at Réam, Kâmpôt, and Kep; and in Vietnam at Rach Gia. The shallow waters along the gulf’s coast provide economically important fishing grounds. here

Koh Samet is an island that is quite near to Bangkok, so most of its visitors come from this city, both Thai residents and tourists from other countries. It is a quiet, family-oriented destination. [links]

It is less popular than the islands located in western Thailand but has a good range of hotels and resorts beside the beach.
This is a post about Koh Chang. here

On both sides, east and west, much of the shoreline is protected as part of marine national parks, which therefore require you pay particular attention to the instructions on what is permitted and what is not.

In general, the Gulf of Thailand offers more classic settings, with long beaches and small coves that entice the visitor to sunbathe on the white sand or take a dip in the sea.

As a temporary solution to the dispute, Malaysia and Thailand on 21 February 1979 signed a memorandum of understanding to create a 7,250 km square joint development area encompassing the entire disputed area. This was later followed by an agreement on 30 May 1990. The agreement allows for joint exploitation and benefit of natural resources in the joint development area. In 1999, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam reached an agreement based on the principal of joint development for the area where the three countries have overlapping claims. All the agreements specifically state that they do not compromise each country's sovereignty claim over the disputed area. See section below for more on the joint development area. [links]

While both countries have agreed on 24 October 1979 on their maritime boundary for this area running 29 nautical miles (54 km) out to sea, the boundary beyond the northeastern terminus of the territorial sea is subject to dispute. Malaysia's continental shelf boundary extends from the terminus at coordinate 07° 49' N, 103° 02' 30" E which corresponds to Point 43 in a 1979 map published by Malaysia denoting its territorial sea and continental shelf. Thailand claims its continental shelf boundary extends from the terminus to coordinate 07° 22'.0 N, 103° 42' 30" E. A small slice of the disputed area is also subjected to a claim by Vietnam. here

The dispute over the continental shelf boundary between Malaysia and Thailand arises from the different baselines for Thailand which the two countries adopt in calculating the equidistant line for boundary. Thailand's proclaimed baseline runs from the terminus at Kuala Tabar (the eastern terminus of the Malaysia-Thailand land border as defined by the 1909 Anglo-Siamese Treaty) northwards to Ko Losin islet and then northwestwards to Ko Kra. Malaysia however does not regard Ko Losin as valid baseline point and calculates the equidistant line on a baseline running along the shore.

“ I candidly confess that I have ever looked on Cuba as the most interesting addition which could ever be made to our system of States. The control which, with Florida, this island would give us over the Gulf of Mexico, and the countries and isthmus bordering on it, as well as all those whose waters flow into it, would fill up the measure of our political well-being. ”
—Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)
