Hello, I am looking to buy a couple 12 inch metal fenders, and I was wondering what the difference between the steel and the galvanized fenders and also how would I paint them to match my black trailer? Thanks

A galvanized steel fender like # CE17701G has a corrosion-resistant zinc coating applied to it, while a raw steel fender like # CE17720 does not. Both types can be painted, but it will be easier to paint the non-galvanized part.

For a galvanized fender you will need to use a water-based primer. Do not use a petroleum-based primer because the oil can interact with the zinc on the parts left over from the galvanization process. You would then use a water-based paint to finish. [links]

It is possible to paint a galvanized boat trailer but you will need to be careful so that your paint job sticks. Essentially, you will need to rinse and sand the surface to make sure that the oil found in the metal don’t ruin all of your hard work.

Disc brakes work better for larger boat trailers and drum brakes are more frequently used for smaller boats.

Boats often face a lot of adversity because they are being kept in the sun, in the rain, or in the water. Even when in use, they could face currents which effect their paint.

If you’re certain that the primer has been applied to the best of your abilities, then it is time to move on to the metal paint. Ideally your metal paint is from the same brand as the metal primer that you used, so you should be familiar with how to follow their directions. here

Galvanized metal is difficult to paint because it's coated with a layer of oil to prevent white rust. Alkyd and oil-based paints may seem to stick at first, but the oily layer eventually "sheds" the paint. Beside this, the zinc content of the galvanized coating reacts with paint's binder to create a film that causes the paint to peel [source: Sherwin-Williams]. Therefore, it's important to follow the correct procedure when painting galvanized metal.

I have a few spots of epoxy on my driveway from where I was coating some wood pieces. Two years later and it is still holding tenaciously. A two-part urethane top coat should be also durable and prevent the epoxy from yellowing. more

Sorry, but I am going to have to disagree. I have done the enamel route and I am not satisfied with the long term results. more

I got a quote from a commercial painting service that does agricultural equipment for $500, which seems high for a little trailer with a wood bed. They use a Sherwin-Williams epoxy primer with a two-part urethane top coat, spray applied. I looked up the products and they are only available in five-gallon pails.

15 yrs on this gas tank, still shines with no maintenance, in a year enamel is fading, I actually will find a side by side, I have a couple. Same for painting tractors, in 10 the JD from them looks well worn, the Imron still looks new with wash, will be a one time event barring physical damage and the factory pak colors are about perfect. better than the enamels from the dealer.
