Geoffrey Rush is relatively subdued--but only by contrast. His Barbossa, whose teeth alone would intimidate a congregation of dentists, brings gnashing to an art form. more

And yet the movie made me grin at times, and savor the daffy plot, and enjoy the way Depp and Rush fearlessly provide performances that seem nourished by deep wells of nuttiness. Depp in particular seems to be channeling a drunken drag queen, with his eyeliner and the way he minces ashore and slurs his dialogue ever so insouciantly. Don't mistake me: This is not a criticism, but admiration for his work. It can be said that his performance is original in its every atom. There has never been a pirate, or for that matter a human being, like this in any other movie. There's some talk about how he got too much sun while he was stranded on that island, but his behavior shows a lifetime of rehearsal. He is a peacock in full display.

There's a nice little 90-minute B movie trapped inside the 143 minutes of "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," a movie that charms the audience and then outstays its welcome. Although the ending leaves open the possibility of a sequel, the movie feels like it already includes the sequel; maybe that explains the double-barreled title. It's a good thing that Geoffrey Rush and Johnny Depp are on hand to jack up the acting department. Their characters, two world-class goofballs, keep us interested even during entirely pointless swordfights.

Consider how boring it would have been if Depp had played the role straight, as an Errol Flynn or Douglas Fairbanks (Sr. or Jr.) might have. To take this material seriously would make it unbearable. Capt. Sparrow's behavior is so rococo that other members of the cast actually comment on it. And yet because it is consistent and because you can never catch Depp making fun of the character, it rises to a kind of cockamamie sincerity.

The original that started it all, The Curse of the Black Pearl is what its sequels tried to be but couldn’t recapture. Unlike the other films, Jack Sparrow, while still loopy and outrageous, feels like an actual character that is capable of clever heists. Combined with a suitably over the top villain in Geoffrey Rush’s Captain Barbossa, The Curse of the Black Pearl has two wonderful leads that power the film to a great deal of fun. [links]

Unfortunately, everything except the technical aspects of the film fall very, very flat.

We don’t get too many films that have that adventure feel akin to the first three Indiana Jones films anymore. Luckily, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl certainly did its part to rectify that problem.

I will be the first to admit, I have an obsession with “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies and pirates in general. For as long as I can remember I have always loved pirates. Whenever my family would travel to Ocracoke, pirates were the only thing I would have on my mind. I was just enthralled with them. Between guns, ships, treasure, parrots, and swords, there is not much for a young boy to dislike about pirates. When the first movie (Curse of the Black Pearl) came out, I was very enthusiastic to go see it. Though I was young and a few of the scenes scared me, I was quite fond of the movie. I have re-watched the first movie dozens of times, and watched all of the others at least once. I may be partial to this film series, but I do have some facts to as why they are the best movies ever made. Below are some reasons, in my opinion, as to why “Pirates of the Caribbean” is the greatest movie franchise of all time.

One thing I really loved about Pirates of the Caribbean are the costumes. They were not the stereotypical and cheesy pirate costumes that you can purchase at your local Walmart around Halloween. The costumes incorporated historical elements of real pirates wardrobes, making every fan of pirates want to dress like Jack Sparrow even more. The accessories donned by the cast such as guns, swords, cannons, and animals matched perfectly and added to the overall effect. The directors and writers also get creativity points in my book for giving Hector Barbossa a pet spider monkey. The creepy monkey made Barbossa even scarier. All in all, the costumes played a small, but impactful part in the movie’s success. here

One of the greatest parts of the movies are the settings in which they take place. The first movie was filmed in St. Vincent and they could not have picked a better place to set the movie. The beauty of the surroundings alone was amazing enough to win an Academy Award. The following films were filmed in a variety of locations that include Dominica, Bahamas, California, and Hawaii. The cast even helped pick some of the locations where they filmed. When watching a movie that is filmed by the sea, I automatically fall in love with it and this is no exception. more

Dead Men Tell No Tales' global cume, so far, is about half of what The Curse of the Black Pearl made in the franchise's maiden voyage. The fifth Pirates film has pulled in approximately $77 million so far, and is set to face continued blockbuster releases as the summer movie season continues to roll out. here
