Re: Lithium Grease for Prop Shaft?
Lithium grease will work fine, but I would use a marine grade of litium grease. Basic lithium grease alone dosnt do a very good job of stopping corosion. it relys on additives to help it along the way. Thats were the marine grade comes in, it has everything in it that you need to fight corosion. Hope this helps!!
The idea behind the shaft being greased is to limit the amount of corrosion that takes place on the metal.

If the Shaft corrodes. its very hard to take the prop off.

TMD
To Marine Doctor: Yes,I realize the why to greasing prop shaft, but would like to know if using Lithium grease is OK??Thanks, Wally here

Silicone gets into a plant and it spreads around like the pink slime in "Cat in the Hat", except it's invisible- and when it gets on a "body in white" it spells disaster in the paint shop- fish eye city! The stuff can't be cleaned enough to get rid of it.
But definitely no silicone grease or spray lube! I can't show you our docs on this, but here's one public story mentioning the issue:
http://www.usatoday.com/story/driveo. paint/2683829/ (story says "silicon", should be "silicone"). here

"As for what grease do I use in gear boxes as well as prop shafts, it is Lithium grease, aka) White Lube, aka) Outboard marine grease. This grease is completely water proof lube and has been around forever. This grease can be purchased in a tub or tube at the local auto store.
After failing to get mine of its inch and a quarter shaft on a previous boat,an old chap got it off in 2 minutes using 2 hammers. You dont try to hammer the prop off the shaft which will cause damage ,you tap the sides of the propellor boss simultaneously with the two hammers aiming the blows towards the center of the propellor shaft. here
Next time use the proper tool for getting the prop off
Just pop into your local auto bits shop and get a 4" puller ..2 leg about £12.50, 3 leg about £16.00 and then you can take your prop off as many times as you want! here
If you have a friction joint and tapered shaft to increase the contact area . what the hell are you greasing for. it goes on dry and clean! more
I have Blakes seacock grease and Keenol.
For wheel bearings, you need a high-temp grease. Ford spec’s a certain type of grease, while most others use this stuff. more
Anti-seize is great for protecting aluminum and stainless steel from galling in iron or steel threads. Just don’t use it on wheel studs. EVER. [links]
Let’s talk about grease! No, not the stuff left over in the pan after broiling some burgers, real grease, the kind that makes your car do the things it needs to do. There are so many types of automotive grease, it can be a little confusing when looking at the lubricant aisle at the local NAPA store. To help make your decision easy, we have all the major types of grease broken down for you so you know what to buy for your next project.
Specialty grease is made for specific purposes; it is not designed for general use. here
