Measuring 40 feet 3 inches, the 400 CC is the largest of Intrepid's six center console models. A newly designed hull, custom-machined propellers and an innovative engine mounting system all contribute to a dry and comfortable ride. On the fishability side, the 400 boasts an extra-wide bow, giving anglers a roomy and stable platform from which to do battle. Also inside the bow there is walk-around fishing room when the seating for six is slid into a huge sun pad in the center at the touch of a button. Amenities include a 5-foot-2-inch forward in-deck insulated fish box with macerator pumps, 9-foot gunwale rod lockers and a variety of livewell options.

Although ease of maintenance, repair, and replacement are all reasons why Intrepid focuses solely on outboard power, there’s another one: speed. My test 400 Cuddy featured a one-step, deep-V hull form possessing about a 45-degree entry and a 21.5-degree transom deadrise. And just forward of that lift-producing step, which is positioned slightly aft of amidships, the deadrise transitions to about 33 degrees. here

I was immediately struck by the massiveness of the three bright-white (optional) engine cowlings over the triple, 350-hp V-8 Yamaha outboards. Two engines are standard, but Intrepid can hang as many as four outboards on the motor bracket. Mark Beaver, chief operating officer, says that even as the size of Intrepid’s vessels grows (it currently builds models up to 47 feet), it will continue to utilize outboard power. And he says the reason is simple: if a client has an engine go down, Intrepid can easily pull it, replace it, and have him back on the water in a day. And even if he had to replace a big inboard, the extended downtime could leave the owner out of service for as long as a week, and that’s not good for either the boater or the builder.
