I nevr had a "good running mercury" to begin with. I always had bad luch with them. So I gues you are telling me I am asking for a beating if I buy a 1989 Mariner 40HP? here

Your engine's RPM range is important in choosing the right propeller for a given application. For example, if you look at your tachometer at top speed and it is not within the engine's RPM range then that is generally not good. You want your RPM's to be within the proper range while at wide open throttle (WOT). Be sure to do your testing under your normal boating conditions and with a good propeller (not bent, cracked, or excessively chipped).

Boating engine company Mercury Marine, based in Fond du Lac, has been granted exclusions from 25 percent tariffs for its outboard engines assembled in China. The requests, made by Mercury’s parent, Brunswick Corp., were approved by the U.S. Trade Representative office, Brunswick said this week.
It is true that MARINER was always a MERCURY brand introduced in the 1970s but the first MARINER outboards were imported YAMAHA motors. This is how YAMAHA got a foothold in the US market. MARINER outboards of the last 20 years are nothing more than MERCURY outboards with a different paint job, no better, no worse.
The early Mercury FourStroke engines were originally manufactured jointly with Yamaha ; Mercury provided the block, crankcase, crankshaft and connecting rods, while Yamaha produced the cylinder heads for the 50hp. Both models were completed with Mercury mid-sections and gearcases.
