He raced Mariette hard, but in 1995 tragedy struck when a collision between the 42m schooner and the 6-Metre Taos Brett IV during a regatta in St Tropez, then known as La Nioulargue, resulted in the drowning of one of Taos Brett’s crew. But succeed it did and the ground-breaking yacht was launched to immense fanfare. Except Yachting World was not invited to the party. The reason was a review I had written for the magazine of Perkins’s book Sex and The Single Zillionaire, a work I really couldn’t recommend to anyone. [links]
Six years later in 2001, Mariette won the Yachting World Concours d’Elegance Trophy at the America’s Cup Jubilee Regatta in Cowes competing against some of the world’s finest yachts. Despite Perkins’s devotion to Mariette, the seed of an idea for a new and technically advanced yacht had already been sewn. here
Perkins took umbrage and banished me from the project until he eventually relented a year later when he gave me a personal tour of Maltese Falcon in Monaco and took me sailing for a couple of days off St Tropez. That was one of my career highlights and the sea trials proved without doubt what an extraordinary sailing yacht Perkins had produced.
The superyacht has a permanent crew of 18 to maintain the technical aspects, including the rig and to operate the onboard "hotel" which can accommodate twelve guests plus four guest staff.
This primarily wood, plank-on-frame Maltese Falcon model is 37" long x 27" tall x 9.5" wide (including base's dimensions.)
The Maltese Falcon yacht was sold in 2009 for $100 million to Hedge-fund manager Elena Ambrosiadou. Perkins sold the yacht to concentrate on his new interest of a personal submarine that has wings and, says The Sunday Times, "resembles Stingray from the children's puppet series".

The main deck features key entertainment areas with a full formal outdoor dining table and social circular bar that lead into the expansive main saloon. Forward on the main deck are a card and playroom area as well as a massive office with video conference facilities. The elegant interior formal dining room has a pared Japanese influence. A striking circular stairwell links all the main guest spaces with the main mast visible across all levels through the glass walkways.

The fantastic design and decor of the main salon allows you to sit and luxuriate in its splendour. The windows are on triple aspect and allow natural light into the room. Its sumptuous seating has been designed to allow for optimum relaxation and socializing. At the mere touch of a button a porcelain Bugatti emerges from the table in the center of the saloon.
Peter Schenzle created "artist impressions" of the DynaRig for Wilhelm Prölss. These were shown in the film by Wiel Verlinde about the Maltese Falcon.
