The vessel was launched earlier this month in VARD Tulcea shipyard in Romania after 18 months of construction. It’s on its way to Norway for additional construction and outfitting—with scientific gear and equipment, including research labs, sonar systems, and a remote-operated robot capable of diving to depths of up to 20,000 feet—for the next six months. more

The vessel, measuring 600 feet long, overtakes Azzam —the 590-foot-long superyacht owned by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates—to become the largest superyacht. Azzam wan launched in 2013 and cost US$600 million to build.

The superyacht is part of Røkke’s global initiatives to “enable a new generation of ocean solutions and raise awareness of global impacts on the marine environment.” The ship will be used as both a research vessel and charter yacht, but any profit generated will be reinvested in programs geared towards creating healthier oceans, the foundation said.

The boat will now travel from Romania to Norway, where the finishing touches will be applied over the coming months, according to Forbes. During this stage, the boat will be outfitted with all manner of scientific gear and equipment, including research labs, sonar systems, a moon pool, classrooms, an auditorium and a remote operated robot capable of diving to depths of up to 20,000 feet (or about 3.7 miles below the surface). Once complete, the boat will be able to carry 55 scientists, along with a crew of 35.

REV Ocean is the brainchild of billionaire businessman Kjell Inge Røkke. He has called the yacht cornerstone of his goal of improving ocean health worldwide. The Espen Oeino-designed boat, which the Norwegian considers equal parts research vessel and charter yacht, will take scientists around the world, allowing them to gather vital information about the impact of carbon dioxide emissions, plastic pollution and unsustainable fishing, all of which Røkke hopes will aid aid efforts to preserve the sea.

Azzam’s six-year reign as the world’s largest superyacht is coming to an end. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates 590-foot boat will soon be displaced at the top of that very exclusive list by a just-launched 600-foot expedition yacht from Norway.

The massive REV Ocean superyacht was launched the VARD Tulcea shipyard in Romania on Saturday, the company announced in a press release over the weekend. The yacht’s first taste of ocean water follows an extensive 18-month construction process. There’s still work to be done, though, as the boat won’t be fully complete in 2020. [links]

Many people believed the story of the Whydah was only a legend; others were sure that the treasure had long ago been stripped from the wreck, or that the remains were too deep and too scattered ever to be recovered. Clifford persisted, studying documents that referred to the original site of the wreck, using old maps to take into account how the shoreline had shifted, and employing special metal-detecting equipment to pinpoint his search. Finally, he anchored his 70-foot boat over the spot where he believed the wreck lay. With two huge cylinders powerful enough to blow the sand on the ocean floor into 15-foot craters, he found what he was looking for.

In 2006 researchers reported an intriguing find: a bone, silk stocking, and shoe of a ten- or 11-year-old boy, the youngest pirate ever identified. Eighteenth-century court records and modern forensics strongly suggest that the boy was John King, who was sailing with his mother from Antigua to Jamaica when Sam Bellamy attacked and plundered their ship in November of 1716. According to a document found in a London archive, young King "declared he would kill himself" if he was not allowed to join Bellamy's crew. Bellamy agreed, and John King was aboard the Marianne when she captured the Whydah. Both the legendary pirate and the boy died when the Whydah sank.

Within the veil, one on each side the shrine, are two women, one (Julia) in a low-cut robe of green, broidered with roses, the skirt much slit, with a girdle of rose and gold, the other (Joanna) in a deep full robe of blue, covered completely <59>with a thick veil of lace or silver gauze. This woman is slight and young, the other mature and robust.
