See full version: Why ‘Black Sails’ has made me question everything I know about good TV

I’m writing this to validate your experience. And in part I think I’m also writing it to validate mine. We can’t let our emotional reaction to a piece of work be undercut by the opinions of the whole. If something calls out to you, it’s valid. Undermining that experience by questioning its validity is cruel in a certain respect. You don’t have to prove something is good or affecting if you yourself has been affected. Don’t look for that confirmation elsewhere. Not in reviews, critical acclaim, or even the opinions of your friends.

By the second season’s mid point, you can see the coverage in the show begin to change. Not necessarily by critics or journalists, but regular TV watchers began using word of mouth to spread the fact that something special was going on here. Certain corners of the internet knew what the hell was up. more

Now I’m just one person with one opinion, so my comments may come off as hyperbolic, or dare I say it, fangirly (LE GASP). But before you dismiss me outright, what if you pause and ask yourself why it’s so hard to believe that a show which requires time and space to develop would get overlooked in this day in age. An age where we‘re used to binging whole seasons in one sitting. here

Assuming you haven’t seen the show, Black Sails is loosely described as a prequel to Treasure Island. In reality however, the story doesn’t hinge on its connection to the novel or the real life historical figures sprinkled throughout. These elements might enhance some of the deeper readings of the text — for which there are many – but as a starting element it’s completely unnecessary information. The show transcends any kitschy History Channel callbacks.

Is television supposed to pick us up and carry us away, or is it something we should work to engage in? There are different standards between what makes a good show and a good novel, but should there always be? Strong literary works ask us to engage with the material and hold it up against a light to analyse it. But TV rarely encourages that same kind of depth of thought. As entertaining as Game of Thrones is, there’s few who would agree that it could withstand the same amount of analysis as Wuthering Heights or Moby Dick. Black Sails on the other hand gets richer the further down you dig. [links]

Unintentionally, her pieces started to act as a homing beacon to the small, but seriously devoted fanbase of Black Sails around the world. People began learning of one another and realized that they weren’t alone in their passionate feelings. So a fandom — still on the outskirts of mass media — began to form. here

Once he reached New Providence Island, Flint quickly became the captain of a crew, having met Hal Gates in a tavern and persuading Gates and his crew to elect him. He then became captain of the mighty Walrus. Over the next ten years, he became the most successful pirate on the island, bringing to Nassau more booty than all other pirate captains.

Flint convinces the crew to reject the pardons, and escape into a terrible storm. In the midst of the storm, De Groot warns Flint that the ship will sink unless the topgallants are cut away. Flint finally grabs an axe and personally cuts them away, leading to the death of several crewmen. here

However, Gates once again displayed his loyalty by punching Logan in the face and reminding the crew of their sworn duty to follow Flint to the death in battle. Eventually, after retrieving the guns from the Andromache and attempting to escape, Flint realized that a mast from the Andromache had broken off and gotten tangled with the Walrus. While Flint and Bones struggled to free the ship from the broken mast, Flint questioned Bones about a letter that Bones had found in Bryson's cabin from Mrs. Barlow. Before Bones could say anything about the content of the letter, he was swept overboard and was presumed dead. After they are safe, the crew hold a funeral as sea for the men who died, with Captain Flint presiding over it.

North’s 3DL sails fell into this category for many years, with variable densities of the carbon, depending on where it was needed to resist the heaviest loads. Our newer 3Di sails are darker now because starting in 2013 with the introduction of 3Di RAW, we’ve rid our highest-performing sails of the cover layer and its associated parasitic weight. We should point out that not all 3Di sails are black, because North has 3Di products that include aramid fibers, which are yellow, and Dyneema fibers, which are white. We also use black, white or gray taffeta or non-woven surface materials for durability on our 3Di ENDURANCE and 3Di OCEAN performance cruising products, for which the owner can choose the color of preference.

Early on, to make a more consistent and solid look on our RAW product, we began to pigment the aramid fibers because they simply looked better black, mixed with carbon and Dyneema fibers. “Dyneema fibers are not available with black pigment but with only a small amount of Dyneema in our 3Di sail structure, a small amount of pigment in the adhesive produces a solid black surface.” here

Black has not always been the fast look for sails, but lately more and more black sails are showing up on the water. Why? The simple answer is that many sails are now made with carbon fibers—the strongest load-carrying material in sails—and carbon is black. If some sails seem even blacker to you than they did a few years ago, you may be noticing North’s 3Di sails, a product that has gained market share over the last half dozen years. Many sailmakers use carbon in their sails, but typically the carbon is laminated between layers of polyester or Mylar film, so it does not look completely black.
