As you know the outboard motor is one of the most important parts of a boat and that’s why it is very important to take proper care of it. However, the outboard motor is a durable part but there are some factors that can damage it and one of the most common among them is Overheating.

It’s not an issue that should be taken lightly and if left untreated, it can result in much higher losses. Hope this article will solve some of your queries and give you some valuable information.

Loss in the power of the engine is also a common cause of overheating.

Was thinking of a way to add heat to a small cabin with the hot water from an outboard motor. Figured that a simple auto heater core and small fan could be used. Run 3/4 water line from outboard block to heater core, then out from heater core to a through hull out the side. Add a valve to adjust the flow to keep pressure up on the motor.

Don't know about the impact on your engine, but I would have to consider the distance to your cabin and I would want to insulate the line all the way to help keep the temperature up until it reached the cabin.

Re: Anyone run a heater from outboard hot water?

If you shut an engine down at the first sign of overheating, there will be no damage. Running at idle is often possible with a faulty cooling system without causing the engine harm.

Simply opening the engine hatch will confirm that the V belt is intact. Apply finger pressure to the belt and confirm that it moves between ¼” and 1/2”, the correct tension.

Water pumps are often the cause of overheating and a bit more difficult to diagnose. more

If not, check the following:

An inexpensive infrared temperature device is a handy tool to have. Check for telltale cooling water or water exiting with the exhaust every time you start the engine. Replace water pump impellers every two years.

The engine overheating alarm starts screaming. What do you do?

I don't know about Yamaha, but my Tohatsu 5hp tender outboard cooling steam is quite cool. When I put my had in it, I'm always surprised by how cool it is, just a little warmer than the sea temp, but I've never tested it when the engine is running hard, so it may be hotter then??

my 4hp, 1990 yamaha discharges cooling water that is too hot for my hand (not boiling but a wee bit too hot) - stream is not super strong but still good

That's too hot. Should be about 50deg rise on the seawater temp, so discharge is 60-70 deg C typically, which is quite hot (hot tap at home is about 65deg). here

1) Check the Water Pump Impeller

Outboard motors rely upon simple mechanical systems that push water through the engine in order to maintain temperature and avoid overheating. When water flow through the outboard motor is disrupted or stopped entirely, overheating occurs. Here are top four things boat owners can do when they notice that water is not circulating through the outboard motor:

3) Check the Water Output here
