Is there a way to test this yourself?

Bad powerpack -that is exactly what I would expect if the motor died like that because it would knock out two cylinders and shut you down under load.

I believe it was OMC who posted a notice that there is usually enough residual oil in a broken-in engine that it could be run at or below 2000 rpm for a good while without doing damage. ME? I wouldn't try it. here

so then what ondarvr and a70eliminator said would not be applicable or realistic with this engine? To be honest I bought my dad a leaf blower long ago, he eventually gave it back to me and I didn't realize it was a two stroke. I had used that thing 1000 time before I realized it. No problems whatsoever. Actually I realized it was a two stroke when I bought a two stoke weed wacker and was mixing the fuel. At that point I through some oil into the gas chamber on the blower and never had a problem with it. Didn't know how severe it could be on an outboard motor or not though.

I think the proper term would be "straight" gas vs mixed gas.

If you've never seen or heard a runaway diesel engine, know that it's violent and, more often than not, dangerous. It's something you should pray never happens to you, but some people are wild enough to grenade them on purpose—usually in a stationary truck or with the engine pulled completely out. One YouTuber took the former approach with an old-school Detroit Diesel and as you'd expect, the aftermath is pretty nasty. here

The guy behind KT3406E, a goofy YouTube channel that exists to pull crazy stunts so we don't have to, has the equipment and the time to test this out for himself. Late last year, he took a '70s GMC semi with an 8V71 Detroit and let it rip with its injector racks stuck—more like tied—wide open. In turn, it fed fuel into the engine until it floated its valves after eight minutes at 4,500 rpm, which is way higher than these compression-ignition lumps were ever meant to reach.
