Correctly preparing your outboard motor for the off-season will help insure that it’s ready to go next spring. In cold climates, freezing weather can cause costly damage to an engine that isn’t winterized properly. Even in milder climates, the end of the boating season is a great time to take care of annual maintenance that will keep your outboard running reliably. Whether you do the job yourself or take your outboard to an Authorized Mercury Marine dealer for service, spending a little time and money today can save a lot of both come spring.

Ideally while the motor is still warm, treat four-stroke and conventional two-stroke engines with fogging oil to prevent corrosion within the engine. Remove the spark plugs and spray the fogging oil directly into each cylinder, following the directions on the can. Use a fogging oil product that is specially designed for use during winterization, such as Mercury Storage Seal. here

The procedure for off-season storage is outlined in every Mercury owner’s manual, and with a few basic tools and the proper supplies, those inclined to do-it-yourself can usually tackle the task. In fact, many late-model Mercury outboards, including the new 4.6-liter V8 and 3.4-liter V6 models, have a label under the cowl with basic maintenance specifications and a QR code that can be scanned with a mobile device for links to how-to videos produced by Mercury.

Depending on the year and if its carbed or injected its very simple, the cylinders need to be sprayed with a fogging oil and the LU oil changed and if carbed the motor run dry of fuel.. I run mine dry of fuel then spray fogging oil into the carb so it coats the mains and cylinders then change out the LU oil and do a vacuum / pressure test and refill if it passes. I run that test just to see if it needs new seals so I can fix it over the winter, most don't do that test. O and store it with the LU straight down so any water left in the motor will drain.

I am sure many will kick in other things and ways. A lot do nothing at all, many don't run dry, and a lot don't bother to change the LU oil.

Winterizing an Evinrude 9.9 outboard motor may seem expensive, but failing to do so will cost more in the long run. Begin by washing the motor. Next, add one ounce of fuel stabilizer to the tank for each gallon of fuel the tank can hold. Run the mixture through the engine.

Flushing attachments, sometimes referred to as “earmuffs,” should be attached to a garden hose. Cover the motor’s cooling water intake with the earmuffs. Run the motor at 1500 rpm for five minutes. Stay tuned tomorrow for Part II of winterizing a 9.9 Evinrude outboard. Keep in mind that as it’s still summer, so continue using Evinrude oil to keep your boat humming along for the rest of the season. here

If it has been sitting two years I would just give up on it and give it to me. LOL Cause I would just laugh all the way home. But seriously, two years is not much different then 6 months to me. Most of outboards are a little tough starting sometimes the first time you try in a while but with a little effort you can get them firing again. Most important thing is good or new fuel in the tank and fuel line. If it does not start after ten pulls or cranking attempts when good fuel is provided then pull spark plugs to clean them with wire brush and put back in and crank again. If that does not do it then spray some starting fluid in the spark plug holes or air intake. If that does not do it then put new spark plugs in. If that does not do it make sure it is getting fuel. If that does not do it, then take it to mechanic for inspection or tune up. But my guess is that it will start after you get new fuel to it, clean the plugs, spray starting fluid in and pull the rope or crank it enough. But before starting fluid I would crank engine enough to get two cycle oiled fuel into the cylindars to lubricate them or fog the cylendars while plugs are out since there is no lube in starting fluid. I always do the least as possible first and then do more if needed.
