Some of the pink antifreeze does has anti-corrosive properties, which I think is nice. Never used it in our 4.3l though. more
I've completed my winterization process on my Volvo 4.3 GXi-J for the first time in my life as this was the first time I had a boat.
Hi, I have an '05 Fourwinns 210 with the 5.0 GXi-E (fuel injection) and an SX 1.6 outdrive. I've been winterizing it myself for a few years now. I leave it in the water from June to Sept. Put a tarp over it for the winter up here in Maine.
Volvo recommends pulling the outdrive every year to inspect the bellows and check the engine alignment. At a minimum grease your gimbal bearing. You should also check over your belts, impeller, steering fluid and trim fluid levels, plugs and all hoses and wiring. I like to coat the engine with T-9. more
-fuel stabilizer: I use fuel stabilizer all year. At the end of the season I add a bit more. If you don't use it regularly put some in before you pull it so the stabilizer has a chance to completely run through the system. If you can't do that make sure you put it in before you run the engine to warm it up before the oil change.
-Hook up water: I have a garden hose fitting on the front left side of the engine.
-Fogging: There are lots of opinions out there about fogging and fogging fuel injected engines is even more unclear. I take off the fuel filter and fill it half with gas and half with 2 stroke oil ( the kind you use for 2 stroke outboards ). Reinstall the filter.
-Warm up: turn the water on and get the engine warm. With that 2 stroke oil in the fuel it will smoke but shouldn't stall. Get it up to 150 deg or so. The engine and fuel system now is nicely lubricated - fogged.
-Kill the engine, stop the water
-Change the engine oil: I use a small 12v elec pump with a small tube stuck into the dip stick tube on the right. Refill the oil. Make sure not to over fill. This method does not completely drain all the oil.
-Replace the Oil filter: Don't forget to lubricate the seal with oil
-Replace the fuel filter: again lubricate the seal.
-Drain the engine water and fill with antifreeze: There are many different ways to do this. Here is my method. Pull all the drain plugs. My engine has four. Two on either side of the bottom of the block and two in the rear of the exhaust manifolds. Reinstall the plugs. Remove the four water hoses that connect to the top of the engine in the front where the thermostat is. Bend the tubes down to drain any water that might be left in there. Now fill the engine with marine antifreeze. Reconnect the hoses and tighten the clamps.
-Outdrive oil: Drain and replace the lower unit oil. Buy the special pump and follow the directions.
-Battery: Put it on a maintainer in or out of the boat.
True boat winterization entails much more than just draining the water. Boat Winterization includes draining the engine, but then refilling the engine with propylene glycol to inhibit corrosion, fogging the engine, draining the sterndrive, stabilizing the fuel system, checking the water pump impeller, etc. This video outline the steps required to winterize and prepare your Volvo Penta 5.7L GXi SX Sterndrive Marine Engine for over the winter storage.
Some owners have also been reporting that cracks have been found on the flange of the transom plate, where the hose clamps attach. The plate is made of a composite material that Volvo does not cover.
In addition, Volvo only covers the cost of replacing the U-joint bellows – and not costs associated with hauling boats out of the water, which are necessary for the completion of this revision work. Volvo also will not pay for any corrosion that could have damaged U-joints and gimbal bearings as a result of failed bellows.
According to Volvo, the bulletins reflect the “continuous improvement” that could be seen in the evolution of the bellows redesign in response to the failures. here
U-Joint Bellows Fail On Volvo XDP. The U-joint bellows have been continuously failing on certain Volvo XDP composite outdrives – and Volvo has yet to offer affected customers an adequate remedy. This is based on a 2010 report in Boat U.S. magazine, as well as more-recent postings about this problem on Internet bulletin boards popular among boaters.
One potential problem: warranty claims are time barred (assuming that the XDP sterndrive was delivered in 2006 or 2007 to boat owners and that a four-year statute of limitations governs breach of warranty claims). However, there may be enough information to prove that Volvo knew of the defect (based on its own service bulletins, as well as consumer complaints and letters issued by Volvo, among other things), yet concealed it, tolling the statute of limitations.
The majority of complaints outline concerns related to 2006 and 2007 models, including about 2,400 boats with 5.7-liter and 8.1-liter engines equipped with XDP outdrives.
