The thermostat housing was left on top of the head, but was changed somewhat and made of plastic that uses a round formed O-ring type seal. The thermostat is totally different and more easily constructed. Next to and somewhat incorporated into the thermostat housing is a provision for a high temperature kill switch that is only installed in the remote electric models.

In the photos below, the left one shows the latch system from the inside. The wide center tongue (which has no latch knob, but is just a guide) goes into a mating slot of the lower cowling's latch unit. The horizontal coil spring is what actually snaps under a section of the lower plastic latch. This lower latch is all plastic so when you pull the outer rear latch which has the arrow on it, this lower latch releases the coil spring. [links]

This article covers many aspects of these series of OMC motors, but over the years it has grown to the point that I have had to split it into separate specific sections. In doing so, you will see a CLICK HERE or Yellow Highlighted underlined link that takes you to the article that is specific to what is being discussed. Some links to online information will have the link in an underlined blue color .

Outboards start like a car; just tilt them down and turn the key. At least newer ones do. But it wasn’t always that way. In the past, you had to learn how to start an outboard motor. Carbureted two-strokes can be fussy, especially when cold.

Also, make sure the tank is vented. If it’s a built-in tank, make sure the vent fitting is not partially obstructed by an insect nest or wax or something. [links]

While newer outboards start right up, older outboards can require a little more know-how to start up quickly and correctly. If you are restoring an old boat or considering the purchase of an older used boat, read the article below for more information on how to start a Carbureted 2-Stroke Engine. Also remember, today’s high-performance outboards provide incredible power and require very little maintenance. If you would like to upgrade your engine or to learn more information about new engines available at TNT Custom Marine click here!

Two strokes are very much available. Carbureted two strokes are becoming fewer but the Evinrude E-tec and Mercury Optimax are both two strokes but are DFI (direct fuel injection) rather than carbureted. here

When it comes to portaging, that means weight and 11 pounds is not insignificant. Four strokes also need to be transported vertically or one one specific side and that side only to prevent engine oil from getting into places it doesn't belong. You need to weigh your intended use carefully.
