I have a Yamaha 150 as well, I don't have any problems when I run it on the muffs and get a steady stream from the water indicator. My muffs are made by Moeller with the dual feed into the cups, hose connects at the center of the clamp with a tube running to both sides. I've read where some people have problems when water supply is not adequate from their hose but I haven't had an issue. Not sure about the internal flush being inadequate but I usually use both for good measure.** more

To clarify I usually run the internal flush right after I get in from the water and then run it on the muffs as soon as I can after that. more

The housing appeared fine. I need to do Capt Ken's air test on it. here

Did you locate the broken impeller pieces? Also, there is the sea water pump( with the rubber impeller you replaced), and there is also the circulation pump. It is belt driven on the motor. I'd check that also.
If you do need the circulation pump, let me know. I'll look up the crossover part. There is an automotive equivalent for 60 bucks, as opposed to struggling to find a used yammie one for several hundred! more

Any scratches or scrapes won't allow the impeller to work.

The hot exhaust wll melt the plastic guide tube but rarely gets the rubber grommet. One problem we see is the plastic tube that comes through the transom. It will split some times and cause the pump to suck air but usually sitting still in the water, it will still suck enough to stay cool. Don't use any automotive parts on the cooling system. They are not corrosive resistant and will not last long. Do the blow test on the pump and see how tight the internals are before you get too far. Also remove the water hose going to the exhaust manifold and blow through it to see if there is any resistance. You many have a riser stopping up. [links]

I have plenty of water pressure (no overheat alarms on the muffs), but should you get an alarm stop.

The one I liked was the rig with both muffs and hose connection.

What some use is a combo "Y" hose set up. One hose runs to the muffs, the other to the power head flush hose. The "Y" adapter (common garden hose Y available at Lowes, Home Depo, etc) comes with a small lever to adjust water flow more or less to each one.. more

Running on the MUFFS and getting to temp, allows water thru the thermostat where the other does NOT (plus the water pump).

Maybe a year or so ago we had a similar thread. Good info and changed my mind, but not my habits.

Somewhat related, if using the Yamaha Water pressure LU hole for the speedometer, I also flush that as well (especially with salt water use). more

You cannot tell the condition of the water pump impeller by looking at it (unless it is in pieces) -- especially since you can't see it unless its removed -- in which case it would be silly to go to that trouble and not install a new one.

Thanks for all the replies that I have received.

I am sure the water faucet has enough water pressure. I used it to run two water sprinklers --in serie. I reduced the water flow to avoid damaging the impeller in the lower unit. Now, I am not sure if I might have overdone this by reducing the water flow for too much.

Glad to hear that the impeller may still be OK even if I cannot see the telltale sign when I use the flushing earmuffs adapter. I was afraid that the impeller may be bad. Now I think about this, the impeller should still be good; I saw the telltale sign when I run the motor in a small water tank. Good. One fewer thing to fix.

When I use the flushing earmuffs adapter, I see water coming out from mainly the "forward" side of the adapter. That area has a depressed area on the surface of the lower unit where the water intake holes are; the depressed area probably is designed for getting more water to go into the water intake holes when the boat is cutting through the water. This means the earmuffs cannot have a good seal on that depressed area. This explains the reason why water is coming out from that area. And this may also mean that there is not enough water getting into the water intake holes in the lower unit. I would like to know if other members in this forum have the similar depressed area in the lower unit, and if they have any problem using the flushing earmuffs adapter. If this depressed area is going to prevent me from using the flushing earmuffs, I will have to stick with using a small water tank.

Jay Chan [links]

With 50 pounds of pressure and water squirting out all around the muffs, you may be creating a void behind the muffs where the pump doesn't get any water. You do not need full force water pressure for any engine on muffs. If its blowing out around the muffs, turn it down some. here

Place the trailered or lifted boat in a spot where water can run off easily. It is best if the ground slopes down away from the rear of the boat.

Thread the earmuffs onto the end of the garden hose as you would a hose nozzle or lawn sprinkler.

Run a garden hose from the water supply spigot valve to the rear of the boat, making sure there are no kinks.
