Yamaha recommends replacing the VST filter every 500 hours or 5 years. Don't wait until you have problems. The whole reason for changing it is to prevent problems from occurring. I have changed them more frequently and noticed debris at that time. I guess it all depends on the quality of fuel that is running through the system. If you do change it, remember to get a new VST o-ring gasket at the same time. Many times when the VST top is removed the gasket swells and it can't be reused. This happens most often if you're in an area that is forced to use E-10 fuels.

that doesn't fit with a lift pump problem.
The engine runs off the fuel that is in the VST - that is its "mini gas tank"
the low pressure pump - when it runs - keeps the VST topped up;
but you can substitute for the LP pump with your primer bulb -
if the problem is that the LP pump has let the VST run empty,
you can immediately fill it yourself with the bulb -
in which case the engine should start.

Nothing related to that has to wait for the next morning;
the lift pump is not going to run overnight [links]

Conversely, a flooded condition - too much gasoline in the intake manifold - now that might resolve itself overnight.

Retards. that's funny. If Reelnative and Rodbolt are outboard "retards", then I don't know what that would make a "mere mortal" mechanic like me.
You guys are a real hoot. more

Additionally, you should remove the propeller if you are working on your outboard when your boat is on its trailer or if the motor is being kept on a storage stand. Here are the steps to do that: [links]

Before we begin, please note that any time you do your own winterizing or other maintenance while still under warranty, it’s best to buy all your supplies from a Yamaha dealer like us and keep all your receipts in a file for proof you are following the manuals in case there are any non-maintenance issues in the future. more

Failure to remove the propeller when working on the motor out of the water could result in serious injury. Please use caution when working on your boat any time of the year. [links]

It’s that time of the year again. Jack Frost is slowly creeping in and creating havoc all over the United States. Hopefully, you have already begun to winterize all your vehicles. Today, we are focusing on the right way to winterize your Yamaha Outboards, specifically the 4-stroke.

It’s not nearly as hard as you’d think, and, if done properly, it ensures that your motor will be ready for the next boating season with minimal work. By combining a fresh water flush, having it filled with oil, giving it a full fuel treatment and a fogging, it will feel rejuvenated, and even its plugs will have had attention and rehabilitation.
