Another Outboard question.
I have a fairly ancient Yamaha 8 that starts fine and idles normally to start with. However as soon as it's used for a couple of minutes it wont run at low revs, cutting out and will only then start with the throttle fully open if at all.
I have checked the fuel supply and made sure there is no water in the fuel by emptying the tank.
I have had the Carb off and appart none of the jets appeared blocked.

Does the considerable knowledge of the forum have any further suggestions as to what I might do to fix this issue. I suspect something more complex has gone wrong but don't know where to look?

I would have to say it definitely sounds fuel related if switching to open helped.
Did you check the fuel pump and does it help to pump the primer bulb while problem is happening?
Did you check the timing while the problem was happening to be sure it was not retarded like in safe/alarm condition?

Testing with a fuel pressure/vacuum gauge is always a good idea to make sure it will pump properly and there are no restrictions in the supply system. more

Ok so I pulled the fuel pump and one of the metal diaphragm / valves is not seating correctly. I will getthe fuel pump replaced and test her out. I'm almost positive that will solve the prob. I will post if it does.

Hi Guys,
I'm new to the forum, but thought I'd see if anybody can answer why I have a problem with my outboard.

The 2006 4stroke 50hp Honda outboard is ftted to my 4.8 m RIBCRAFT RIB. The o/b is serviced , in top condition for its age, and generally runs very well. She will rev well into the red line under load.
Problem is, if I floor her from a stnding start, she splutters and cuts out. This does not happen if I gradually increase revs, then give her full throttle. I know she is old school carbs and not injected, and I have been told by my service engineer that this is the reason, but surely she shoud not die if given too much juice from standing start?

After talking with a Yamaha tech he said to try the throttle position sensor, if the problem was intermittent. That makes sense now. [links]

If the throttle position sensor is not reading properly, it will not allow the motor to go past a certain RPM as a fail safe function. [links]

It was a pretty easy task. except, I had to have a tamper free hex socket for the strews. the little senor is located on top of the motor under the large cover. Starboard, rear, of the motor on top of the throttle linkage. more

I agree, A clogged filter will usually give a slightly different set of conditions. Usually a lack of power across the RPM range. My motor would accelerate normally to 4200 or 4400 RPMs and then pull back. It felt just like running out of gas. The problem with the TPS is the intermittent condition. when mine was messing up, i could usually shut down and restart, and that would cure it. I clogged VCT will not give that scenario. At the time i did not understand the system and changed the VCT based on reading here and THT. The VCT change was not successful on mine.

Ed. the VCT is a small fuel filter located in the fuel system reservoir on the side of the motor. It was much more difficult to change than the throttle position sensor. I changed it first after reading about this common problem. It did not help mine. My symptoms were identical to yours. [links]

Mine did almost identical. I changed all of the filters, including the VCT. It did not help. I changed the throttle position sensor and have not had a problem since.
