I'm pretty sure your motor has the "prime-start" feature for cold starts - item #34 in this diagram: more
What can be done to make the things start easier when cold ?
I've got a '06 50 TLR, similiar problem.--with, Prime Start System--- here
I have a new 50 hp 2 stroke on my flats boat. Hard to start cold. Pump up the primer ball 5 or 6 times then it takes several attempts to start. Really hate grinding the started. Fast idle lever doesn't help. Pushing key switch does nothing. Understand it has an automatic choke (I miss the toggle switch choke control on my old one).
Once started and warmed up starts immediately every time.
my older carbed engines had almost a ritual required before they would start. Like my old Johnson was fuel bulb till hard, pump the throttle to WOT 3 times, Turn key for 7 seconds, tap choke twice while engine is turning, stop turning key key, pump the throttle again, Turn key with no choke and hold until start (normally was 3-5 seconds) [links]

If what you are doing is not working try something different. For example, don't raise the fast idle lever and see what happens. Maybe try the fast idle lever just half way up and see what happens.
Please provide the engine data plate information so we know exactly what engine you have. more
I am thinking he may be flooding it due to all of the smoke at start up.
needs some air as well as fuel to fire properly
have you tried checking spark to make sure all is good when it is not starting up. more
Do you have a manual for the engine? Does it run well after you get it going?
spraying something into the carb while running does nothing to clean any part of the fuel system

The choke knob, part #24: https://www.boats.net/catalog/yamaha. 115tlrw/intake when pulled towards the operator, should close them fully.
