Can you get behind it and shoot it. Some you can't.

I played with my throttle a bit in my driveway last night. At lease knowing that the push button is sticking helps to vibrate the throttle the right way to help it come out. Now, when I put the throttle upright, and just wiggle/vibrate it from side to side (port to starboard) the button seems to pop back out. That is some improvement anyway. here

It took me about 3 hours, I would guess. I was working pretty slowly though, to be sure I could get it all back together the right way. Ultimately, there is a gear that sits behind the neutral button - you have to get that gear off, to get to the spring that is behind it and reposition it on the pin that holds it and the neutral button in place. Wasn't that hard - just a bit of a pain to work bent over and around for a few hours. I was careful to disturb as little as possible as far as wiring and cables. A true mechanic would probably pull the whole thing out and work on it on a work bench, which would have been a lot easier. [links]

In these cases, the TPS isn’t providing the right input, the onboard computer cannot direct the engine to work properly. When the car accelerates while driving, it usually means the butterfly valve inside the throttle has closed up and pops open suddenly when the driver presses on the accelerator. This gives the car an unintended burst of speed that occurs because the sensor cannot detect the closed position of the throttle. more

Once the TPS begins to fail, even partially, you’ll need to replace it right away. Replacing the TPS will include clearing relevant fault codes, and may require software reprogramming of the new TPS module to match other engine management software. This is all best left to a professional mechanic who can provide you with a diagnosis, and then install the correct replacement part.

The throttle position sensor (TPS) is part of your vehicle's fuel management system and helps ensure that the correct mixture of air and fuel is delivered to your engine. The TPS provides the most direct signal to the fuel injection system of what power demands are being made by the engine. The TPS signal is continually measured and combined many times per second with other data such as air temperature, engine RPM, air mass flow, and how quickly the throttle position changes. The collected data determines precisely how much fuel to inject into the engine at any given moment. If the throttle position sensor and its other sensor partners do their jobs correctly, your car accelerates, cruises, or coasts smoothly and efficiently, as you expect, while maintaining optimum fuel economy.

If you start to experience engine misfires, stalling, or rough idling when the car is stopped, it can also be a warning sign of a failing TPS. You don't want to wait to get this checked out! more

If you're working with a 4 stroke carburetor that the throttle is not closing or returning on properly there are a multitude of things that could be out of adjustment, bent or improperly assembled such as the way the throttle cables connect to the linkage, the alignment of the throttle plate to the shaft, the accelerator pump and linkage being bent or improperly assembled, among a multitude of other possibilities. If you are suspecting problems with a 4 stroke's carburetor, you should be able to find solace by disassembling, cleaning, and reassembling the carburetor [links]

Sacked out throttle return springs are not very common as just mentioned but can happen, after all, anything is possible.

You may not be aware but there are a lot of dirt bikes running around that when you're ready to let off the gas, they keep on pulling for another fraction of a second and there's One Word for This: Scary. If you know something about that, this article will get you dialed with a throttle that actually snaps shut when you let off the gas and doesn't keep on pulling another 25 ft or so, or until you manually shut the throttle by twisting the grip forward, so let's get into it.

On a 2 stroke carburetor, there is not much that can be assembled improperly which could cause a throttle return problem short of the slide being improperly installed in the body of the carburetor, in this case the throttle is usually stuck wide open with no control at the twist grip. If you are pretty sure the slide is installed properly and you have checked all the other recommendations listed above, yet the throttle is still not returning properly, there is a chance that the carburetor was improperly assembled last time someone had it apart. If this is the case, it is recommended that you obtain a service manual specific to the dirt bike you are working on and follow the steps outlined in the manual to properly disassemble, clean and reassemble the carburetor as this will likely remedy the situation if your problem is truly carburetor related.

A throttle tube that has dirt and things of that nature trapped between the throttle tube and handlebar will cause a throttle to not return to closed properly when it's time to let off, so it is a good idea to frequently remove the throttle tube from the handlebars, and clean this area. here

If all looks well so far but the throttle still doesn't slam shut like it should when you let off the gas, and you're still wondering if it is cable related problems, you should lubricate the throttle cable(s) before continuing but don't just force any lube down the cables without proper preparation which includes removing the top of the carburetor and disconnecting the cable from the slide so as to prevent making a mess which will ultimately run down into the carburetor, potentially causing jetting or other problems. more

Twist the idle screw counterclockwise until you hear the engine start to sputter and die. When this happens, stop and turn the screw one half turn clockwise. Your bike should now be idling at the correct speed. [links]

Close the choke lever and listen to the engine carefully. Twist the idle adjustment screw slowly counterclockwise. You should hear the engine speed start to slow.

The carburetor on your Yamaha Road Star controls the amount of air and fuel that reaches the engine while the throttle is closed. This is what allows the engine to run when sitting still in neutral or with the clutch lever pulled in. If your carburetor is maladjusted however, this will not function correctly and the bike may die without the throttle open. Learn to adjust the idle of your Yamaha Road Star carburetor and ensure that your bike will always stay alive.

Locate the idle adjustment screw on left side of the bike just below the rider's seat. Twist the adjuster screw clockwise one full turn. This will ensure the bike stays alive so you can adjust it to the proper setting.

Open the choke by pulling the choke lever on the left handlebar control toward you. Set the bike on its kickstand, put it in "Neutral" and start it up. Allow the Road Star to warm up for about 10 minutes before continuing with the adjustment procedure. here
