We like the fact that the R-27 comes standard with both bow and stern thrusters. These electric units will go a long way toward reducing the amount of stress the captain shoulders when approaching an unfamiliar dock. For those who are new to boating, this equipment is especially nice. Thrusters, and engine controls, are operated from the helm that’s adjacent to a clever companion seat arrangement. It’s a bi-fold seat that allows two passengers to sit facing forward and help the skipper keep watch. But when the hook is down and provisions are broken out, the seat folds the other way to become part of the dinette. The dinette is served by a galley with a propane stove and oven. [links]

The Ranger Tugs R-27 is a pocket trawler that's trailerable - and then some. more

The Ranger 27 is powered by a single 180-hp Yanmar 4BY2 turbocharged 4-cylinder common rail diesel engine. As you might guess, speed is not this boat's strong point, but range is. Even at a “fast” cruise between 13 and 15 knots, the boat will travel about 200 miles on a tank of fuel, which equals about two eight-hour days between fill-ups. For more efficient runs, throttle back to 7.5 knots and take in all of the sights while enjoying savings at the pump. here

A pocket trawler you can trailer? Ranger Tugs says yes, with the R-27.

There’s a lot to be said for a pocket cruiser and the ingenuity required to fit all the necessities and comforts of a larger boat into a trailerable package, like the Ranger Tugs R31. But even at 31’ this can be a bit larger or a little more expensive than some want. And if there’s any builder that’s seems to have perfected shrinking trawlers down to size without losing use-ability, it’s Ranger Tugs. Now the Washington-based company proves it’s possible to be efficient with space, weight, hull form and ride in an even smaller package, with its R-27, an 8’6”-wide cruiser that’s built for week-long adventures and priced far below the cost of a full-size model.

Yup, the zincs can come in 23 or 24 mm wrench models. I have a cut down wrench for both.
I also have a socket (I forget, 23 or 24) that I cut down so it is only about 3/4 inch tall which really helped to bet in there and get the tight ones out. I also have a long closed end wrench that I can slip over the handle of the cut down wrench to increase my leverage. It took me a couple years but now I have a tool set for just about every engine zinc combination.

The 2011 R27 Ranger Trailerable Tug has nearly 50 sq ft of aft deck space making the cockpit 25% larger than the original R25. This allows for easy access to the standard 180 HP Yanmar diesel and keeps the engine noise out of the cabin. The larger cockpit also lends itself to more above and below deck storage.

The well appointed cabin has a midship office with desk and chair, this space also converts to a berth that sleeps two. The dinette table is on a hydraulic piston that allows for an easy conversion to a berth or lounging area. The spacious front v-berth sleeps two adults and is over 6‘5“ in length. more

On the docks, amid piles of luggage, waited Jeff Messmer and his family, along with Todd Banks, president and general manager of Kenmore Air Harbor, and his family. For the last 10 days, the two families had cruised in concert and enjoyed the best that British Columbia has to offer in late August. With watermakers and solar panels aboard, they’d been living off the grid for several days at a time, enjoying the bounty of pristine salt waters. Now they were headed home, leaving Jeff and I to spend a few days cruising in the two tugs before heading across the Strait of Georgia to deliver the boats to Nanaimo.

The boat I tested had an optional Kyocera 135 solar panel on the cabin top centerline overhead, with a Morningstar control panel mounted to starboard at the entrance to the forward cabin. “This optional solar panel is capable of 9.4 amps on a sunny day, 0.5 to 1.0 amp even on cloudy days, and it kept the batteries charged all week, even with the refrigerator running full time,” Messmer said. “We were also running the portable freezer, and were careful about lighting, and we could hang on the hook for two days at a time. When the sun is hiding, the engine has a 150-amp alternator, which charges the batteries up in very short order.” here

With a top speed of 20 knots, a high cruise of 15 knots, and an economical cruise of 8 knots, the R-27 is well suited to those who wish to cover distances when time is of the essence and fuel is readily available, yet still want the option of cruising for long periods at slower speeds. The boat answers the helm immediately but will track well over long distances with very little input from the helmsperson. Trim tabs are provided, and I found them useful for crosswind situations and for putting the nose down slightly when taking a 2- to 3-foot chop on the nose.
