As Cassio finishes the recitation of his vision of the reunion of brave Othello and beautiful Desdemona, the lady herself appears. Iago, Roderigo, and Iago's wife, Emilia, come on shore, too, but Cassio has words only for Desdemona. He cries, "O, behold, / The riches of the ship is come on shore!" (2.1.82-83), and demands that the men of Cyprus kneel as he greets her, saying "Hail to thee, lady! and the grace of heaven, / Before, behind thee, and on every hand, / Enwheel thee round!" (2.1.85-87).

Othello is now ready to go to the governor's castle. He tells everyone that the war is over because the storm has drowned the Turkish fleet, and he greets old friends. Calling her "honey" and "sweet," Othello assures Desdemona that the natives will be friendly to her, and says he's so happy he's talking too much. Then he sends Iago to the ship for the luggage and tells him to bring back the master of the ship, too, because he should be honored. With this he and Desdemona leave the stage. [links]

When Iago delivers his punch-line, Desdemona exclaims, "O most lame and impotent conclusion!" (2.1.161), and maybe she laughs. After all, it's a pretty good joke if you're in a macho mood. She then asks Emilia and Cassio if they don't agree with her, and Cassio takes the opportunity to have a little conversation with the beautiful Desdemona. As he is doing so, Iago delivers an aside. An "aside" is a speech which other characters on stage can't hear, and asides are often delivered to the audience, but Iago is speaking to Cassio, who doesn't hear how Iago mocks and mimics him. Cassio is playing his part as the charming ladies' man, holding Desdemona's hand, smiling, blowing kisses to her. Iago, in his aside, tells Cassio that his little charming tricks are going to cost him his job. Cassio blows a kiss to her again, and Iago finishes his aside by saying "Yet again your fingers to your lips? would they were clyster-pipes for your sake!" (2.1.177-178). "Clyster-pipes" are enema tubes, and Iago's opinion is that Cassio is so full of sh-- that he needs a good cleaning-out. here

As the ship traveled off the northern coast of Cuba at around 20 knots, I noticed a cloud over the ship. I pointed this out to my wife, as it was an unusual cloud. She however can only confirm that this cloud stayed over the ship in excess of 20 minutes, as she was more interested in reading her book. As I give details of my vision keep in mind we the ship was moving, yet this cloud remained directly overhead.

After seeing these images in the smaller circular formations my attention was drawn to the main overall cloud as the sun had illuminated the top portion. At the top of the cloud appeared a cone opening, orange, red, and pink colors surrounded this opening. As the sun drew closer to the opening, there appeared a dark, almost black large disk in the center of the main cloud directly below the cone opening. The sun drew closer and as I thought the sun was about to become engulfed by the cloud, the light from the sun grew strange, as if we were in the first stage of an eclipse. At that point I became afraid, fearing God, to the point that I took my wife by the hand an expressed that I thought we were witnessing a biblical event and were about to see a 3 hour eclipse as if indeed the sun was being engulfed by the dark disk which was huge. Shortly thereafter the light given by the sun began to return to normal on the deck of the ship and the cloud started to evaporate. As the cloud evaporated I began to weep. [links]

The first to appear was a clearly defined image of the Cross. The Cross was radiant. As were all following images. Then three Crosses appeared on a hill followed by images of God the father. Then Jesus on the cross. Followed by visions of Angels and the Mother Mary. All clear radiant images illuminated by the sun. here

Antarctic sea creatures have some amazing adaptations. Seawater here is below the freezing point of fresh water, so every marine animal needs a strategy for not turning into ice. Many fish (like the toothfish) have evolved special antifreeze proteins that latch on to incipient ice crystals and prevent them from growing. This makes life a pain in the ass for anyone trying to deep-freeze a toothfish, but since those people are mostly fishermen—the most hated visitors to the Ross Sea—no one sheds a tear. here

This is the first time I've ever seen her off-duty. The galley crew on the Akademik Shokalskiy work twelve-hour days preparing, serving, clearing, and cleaning up after meals for fifty-six passengers, often in seas so bad that diners have to hold the edge of the table to keep from falling off their stools (which are prudently bolted to the floor).

Nothing about McMurdo improves with proximity. Up close, the station looks like a cross between an oil refinery and a struggling community college. There is an enormous amount of motor traffic, both in earthmoving machinery and in fat red pickup trucks with the NSF logo. If anyone has an image of Americans as car-happy cowboys, today is doing nothing to dispel it. here
