In 1980, Benetti built a yacht for Saudi businessman and billionaire, Adnan Khashoggi, for $100 million. Originally, this beauty was named after Khashoggi’s daughter, Nabila, and was at the time ranked as one of the largest and most impressive yachts in the world. Of course, times have changed and there are now bigger and better pieces of machinery that will blow everything else out of the water. While it was owned by Khashoggi, it appeared in the Bond movie, Never Say Never Again.

Khashoggi ran into financial problems in the late 1980s when he sold the yacht to the Sultan of Brunei, who in turn swiftly sold it to Donald Trump for $29 million in 1988. After a huge refit, Trump renamed it Trump Princess. As you’d imagine, Trump’s refit wasn’t just adding a couple of deckchairs here and there: the yacht got the full works. A pool on the sun deck, a sauna, a cinema , an elevator, a disco and even a private hospital are just a couple of the amenities that Trump kitted it out with.

In 1989, after the refit was completed, Trump announced to the world on Newsday that he would be building Trump Princess II, and it would be much bigger than Trump Princess – “something in excess of 400 feet long, closer to 500 feet”. In the same breath he said that he would be accepting bids from yacht builders for this project, but it was Amels, the company that completed the refit of Trump Princess, that secured the deal to build and develop the 128-metre Trump Princess II.

While Donald Trump once owned the third-largest yacht in the world, the current president believed the 281-foot Trump Princess wasn't quite big enough. In 1993, he toyed with creating a record-breaking private pleasure vessel, and even paid some $170,000 for its design, Fortune reports.

Unlike Trump, Adnan Khashoggi has always had a thing about boats. The arms dealer, who took advantages of connections with the Saudi royal family to amass a fortune worth around $3billion at its peak, acquired his first yacht when he was 18 and traded up as his wealth increased.

“No-one really knows what she originally cost,” says Jonathan Beckett, CEO of Burgess, the broker that arranged the sale to Trump. Named Nabila, after Khashoggi’s only daughter, the vessel was launched in 1980. Insisting that she be totally self-contained, Khashoggi had included in the specification everything from a patisserie and three-chair hair salon to a screening room with an 800-film library and a hospital with operating theatre. more

After all, Trump doesn’t water-ski or go in for swimming in a big way, and he’s always tried to avoid the sun. As a matter of fact, he has never owned a big boat before. He doesn’t even particularly like boats. “I’m not into them,” he says with a shrug, “I’ve been on friends’ boats before and couldn’t get off fast enough.”

As soon as the news was broken, Beckett was suddenly deluged with higher offers from potential buyers who had been sitting on the fence. Meanwhile, Trump was arranging to pay less. He was contacted on behalf of Khashoggi, who was said to be upset that his daughter’s name would now be on a yacht belonging to someone else. Negotiations ensued and Trump agreed to rename the boat Trump Princess if the cost were reduced by about $1million. “He got an unbelievable deal, in retrospect,” says Beckett. [links]
