It must be the same as my 15hp. Turn the thrittle fully to reverse. Once you drop the lower unit till it stops, remover the bolts holding the water pump to the lower unit and gently pull down on the LU until the pump separates. Once the pump separates you can lower the LU down off the driveshaft and out of the way leaving the upper part of the pump and the drive shaft hanging there by the coupling of the shift shaft which is under the pump. TAKE NOTE OF THE DIRECTION THE SHIFT CAM IS FACING BEFORE REMOVING THE LOWER PART OF THE SHAFT. Unscrew the lower part of the shift shaft counting the number of turns to remove (that is the shift adjustment). Once the lower portion of the shaft and coupling are out of the way the pump and drive shaft can be removed.

Why in the hell they put that coupling under the pump so you can't pull the unit without the above procedure boggles the mind especially when the shop manual has no mention of it. I think it's a long shaft thing. more

Get help to put it back together (2 friends). You don't have enough hands to do that many steps at once. 1) Line up the splines top and bottom. 2) Line up the water tube. 3) Screw on the shift shaft and put together the pump while holding everything in place. 4) Line up the shift cam in the hole it must slide into at the bottom of the LU (before assembly shift the throttle fully to the forward position extending the shift shaft so it lines up in the lower unit first). It took 3 of us 4 tries to get it back together. A genuine pain in the arse.

How do you choose the correct lower unit and components?

Outboard lower units house parts like gears, bearings, water pump, shift linkage, and driveshaft. If there is an issue with one or more of these vital parts, your boats overall performance will suffer. more

Having good quality outboard lower unit components is equally as important as having a strong engine to propel it. Lower units are measured by hours used and are either compatible with two-stroke or four-stroke upper units. Furthermore, the lower unit must match exactly with the upper units make, model, number of strokes, and the years of production, as well as any other important information, such as V6 or V8. A few other things you will need to know include the:

Driveshaft : Replace the rubber smaller O-Ring (5/8" OD x 3/32"width) on the driveshaft. The driveshaft is made of stainless steel and is 1/2" dia. The groove is placed so the O-ring rests against the bottom of the crankshaft, sealing grease in and water out of the splines, trying to eliminate the driveshaft from being stuck in the crankshaft extension. This O-Ring goes in a groove around the upper splines about 7/8" down from the upper end on motors up until at least 1983. This O-Ring does not show being used in the 1990 parts catalog. This may have been eliminated as mentioned below due to the fact that some shafts have broken at this groove. here

In the process, the driveshaft with the water pump impeller key will be forced out through the top of the water pump's plastic water pump housing, usually breaking the top of the pump housing. However you might luck out in that it only ruins the water pump's top seal.

With the gearbox together, if there is some wear/roughness on the prop-shaft, it would be hard to really inspect it without a total disassembly. I think I would pull the seal (ruining it), polish the shaft as best I could with #240 emery cloth, and replace the seals (with the old two single ones back to back) trying to get the seal contact area possibly closer to the motor's seals original location. Worry About Draining Water Out in Freezing Weather :
Those who live in cold climates where the temperature stays down COLD much of the winter may be concerned as to whether how to do a winterization where there is no water left internally that may freeze and break metal parts of the motor. Where I live it hardly ever gets that cold so do not even think about freezing, but for those who do, read the below.

Exhaust Housing : These have been modified over time to accommodate exhaust improvements. The early models up until about 1981 when the 15hp motors were fitted with the round tuned exhaust tubes had the square exhaust tubes sealed on the bottom with a rubber ring. Then about 1990 all, even the 9.9s were fitted with the round exhaust tube. The later round tubes were not sealed at the bottom. As shown in the RH photo below, the tube stops about 1" above this plate that has the two approximately 5/8" diameter relief holes in. more
