thanks for all of the info i plan on working on it next week. here
Thanks I will check the bowls that would make sense on why it seems like too much gas is getting to it. the motor is oil injection i do know that do you have any idea what the compression should be? Thanks for your help more
I've never owned a boat before and I was given a 1996 bayliner Jazz with the 120 mercruiser xr jet drive. the boat appers to be in good shape but i really dont know much about the motor. The boat had been sitting for a couple months before i got it. I tried to start it on the trailer and it started right up once but then cut off. I tried to start it again but it wouldnt start. I then heard a dripping sound coming from under the black cover that is connected to the carbs. Does it sound like I flooded it or does it sound more serious. Any help would be appreciated
those use carbs with a bowl and a float, see if a float is sticking and flooding the carb, pump the primer and see if fuel is running out a carb if so take off the bowl and see why it is flooding. you really need to do a compression check just so you know what you have also find out if it is premix or oil injection,, ask the previous owner
I loaded the 120xr2 manual and pm'd you a link-most guys just need the 90-120 SJ manual. more
The Jazz has a relatively flat bottom, which contributes to the maneuverability and handling of the boat. According to Jerry Stansfield, Director of Marketing Communications for U.S. Marine, "It was seen as the next step in the personal watercraft revolution -- a boat that you could drive instead of ride. It had to be able to spin out and do things a wet bike could, but also be well-mannered and predictable. I've seen our test drivers do many things in them, but they've never been able to flip one."
Combining a force-based, two-stroke, 90-horsepower outboard motor with a jet pump gets you a lot of fun out of a small boat. More personal watercraft than cruising vessel, this little boat combines the best of two worlds. Like a larger boat, you can gunkhole in your favorite spot, do a bit of swimming and then stretch out to dry in the sun. Like jet ski, you can get wet in the spray as you zip around, twist and turn on the water.
The top speed of the Bayliner Jazz is 40.6 mph, and she will accelerate from zero to 25 miles per hour in 6.54 seconds. The engine is a 75.1cc Mercury SportJet 90; the Mercury SportJet 120 was an optional feature. The standard engine provides 90 horsepower with a 17-gallon fuel capacity. Jazz operators can nosedive the boat by reversing the engine at speed; this maneuver does no mechanical harm to the water jet engine.
In the aft seat, three passengers can ride next to each other. It has no seating in the bow area when the boat is underway nor is there a bow cushion for catching some rays while at anchor. Popular Mechanics described the interior fit and finish as, "thin seats; affordability chief interior attribute." It has an ample 8.3 cubic feet of storage space. here
The boat is 14 feet long and has a beam of 5 feet, 8 inches. Weighing 1,000 pounds, it has 16.7 square feet of deck area and the cockpit is 17 inches deep. [links]
Bayliner built two jet boats since J. Orin Edson founded the company in 1955, the Jazz and the Reflexx. The company put two years of research and development into the Jazz. Originally introduced in 1993, the base price for a Bayliner Jazz in 1994 was $8,495 and included the trailer. In 1996, Bayliner added an aft facing seat so one passenger could keep an eye on water skiers behind the boat and the 120-horsepower engine was standard. here
Glad you passed on boat, for several reasons. "The capri", if it does NOT have hydrofoils on lower end, and you have more than two people onboard. It will take awhile to get on plane, and it is a light weight craft. SO! expect to get pummeled, in "LARGER BOAT," high traffic areas! [John]! if you have a printer and plenty of ink and some extra time, you can probably download the manual from the internet. Good luck to you both. OH! wayne. they used a CORK carb flote bowl gasket ,that brakes down and should be replaced. simple fix for not getting the rpm's you should be getting AND some other prob's. [links]
I have a '95 Sea Ray (Sea Rayder) 13.5' with the 90 HP Merc SportJet, so there's a lot of similarity. Because of the inefficiencies of the jet, it's actually rather underpowered. I can pull a skier who weighs maybe 100# max, but even then it's a fight to get them up. Pulling a 12-year-old granddaughter on a tube is even problematic. It's also much louder (uncomfortably so) than more recent boats. more
Re: 14' Bayliner Jazz Jet boat 90 hp merc. ANY GOOD?? [links]
You made a good move passing on the jet boat. They are not designed for fishing or cruising slowly. They are made to go fast. Your replacement appears to be a great find, and much better suited to your purpose. Don't be discouraged by the reputation. Although it is an entry level boat, most of the problems arose fron lack of basic maintenance. Being it was stored inside, rot should not be an issue. Have a experienced mechanic go over the motor, replace the dried out impeller, and have a tune up done and you should have worry free boating. Treat your equipment well and it will always get you home. A dollar spent on maintenance probably saves 5 dollars spent on repair.

This can be seen in many areas of the boat. here
The newer boats are of higher quality. In the ’70s and ’80s, Bayliners had a reputation for making lower-quality boats. This is reflected in the recalls that were in this time period.
Boats made in later years do not have these problems.
Some people say that the hatches sag when you step on them. Another problem is that they used to come with Force motors which were not as powerful. [links]
Some of the boats are built in Mexico.
