It seems to be running fine, but it's a 2 stroke smoker. Running 50:1 gas to oil ratio as recommended, so I wonder if air/fuel mixture adjustment or idle adjustment could reduce the smoking. Any suggestions? Would reducing the ratio be asking for trouble on a 1999 motor?

I'm still here without a running motor, at least, not now. I put the carb back on and got the motor started and it ran just fine albeit a little fast at idle three days ago. No probs with gas coming out of Atmospheric vent though! Since it was getting dark I decided to tackle the idle issue the next day. [links]

As requested, I've added more picks of the different floats and how they hang down when resting on the needle. At the very least, I hope this helps someone else with their battles. [links]

1999 40 ELPT, Ser # OE354368: Last week I took off the carb and cleaned it. I soaked it in carburetor cleaning solvent called Chem-Dip. This may have been overkill, but that's what I did. I replaced the float, needle jet, gaskets, and float pin. I have cleaned and replaced these parts before with only having to adjust the mixture, idle, and linkages to get it running well again. However, this was he first time I soaked the whole carb in cleaning solution. The motor won't start and it is doing something I've never seen before on any carburetor.

As suggested, I blew through the fuel inlet (See yellow arrow in photo) with the carb upside down and could not force any air through. I also reinstalled the float that I took off and the result was the same. Just to test it, I turned the carb right side up and blew through and I could feel that air was getting through. Same for both floats. It seems to me that this is as it should be. If not, let me know. As for being adjusted correctly, I'd guess the float should lay parallel to the float housing. Is that correct? more

See attached photo. The arrow points to the location where when I crank the motor, gas will squirt out. It doesn't do it on the first crank. It squirts on the 3rd or 4th crank once gas has been pumped to the carb. Never had this happen before.

NOTE: Please look for the carb MODEL SERIES stamped on the carb (usually stamped on or near the mounting flange).
Some motors had multiple carb models in a given year (e.g. TC-111C, WB-26A, WE4-2, etc.) so please examine your carb for the model number.

Attach a flushing attachment to a garden hose. Set the flushing attachment over the raw water intake ports of the motor and turn the hose on full force. Start the motor and warm it to its normal operating temperature range. [links]

The parameters for adjusting the carburetor on a Mercury outboard involve both the idle speed screw that controls the motor's speed at idle, and the mixture screw that controls the fuel-to-air ratio. Adjusting both of these requires that you have the motor running. While the adjustments seem minor, both affect the performance and economy of your motor.

Move the motor's shifter into "Neutral." Loosen the throttle cam follower screw. Turn the idle speed screw until the throttle plate positioner does not touch the idle speed screw. The throttle plate will close.

Loosen the jam nuts, located right below the throttle cam on the throttle cable. Move the the throttle to the idle position. Set the cam follower roller against the throttle cam. Adjust the throttle cable sleeves in their mounting bracket so the roller is centered on the raised mark on the throttle cam, while allowing some slack, between 1/16 inch and 1/8 inch in the throttle cables, as measured with a machinist's ruler.

Tighten the jam nuts on the throttle cable and tighten the cam follower screw. Turn the idle speed screw clockwise -- to the right -- until there is a gap of between 0.005 inch and 0.040 inch between the throttle cam and the cam follower.

Attach a shop tachometer to the motor's Number 1 cylinder. Turn the idle speed screw on the carburetor linkage to adjust the motor's speed to between 700 and 800 rpm.

RPM Information: 4750-5250
Your engine's RPM range is important in choosing the right propeller for a given application. For example, if you look at your tachometer at top speed and it is not within the engine's RPM range then that is generally not good. You want your RPM's to be within the proper range while at wide open throttle (WOT). Be sure to do your testing under your normal boating conditions and with a good propeller (not bent, cracked, or excessively chipped).
