Not too long ago, a customer came in needing a windlass installed on his SeaRay Sundancer. Luckily, he had some excellent plans for how he wanted it done. He wanted to take the lid off the anchor locker and fabricate a piece to fit over it that protrudes enough from the bow to stow the anchor. Sort of like a mini-bow pulpit. This was a great project for my shop because it encompasses a variety of skills, all of which I’m pretty good at, even if I do say so myself.
Finally, I had to install wiring of sufficient size to get a 35 amp load from the batteries to the very front of the boat, installing a circuit breaker, fuse, a rocker switch and contactor at the helm, and run beefy cables all the way to the bow. Let’s get to work!

Voila! The finished product looks like it came from the factory! Notice the bow lights on either side of the anchor at the forward end of the bowsprit. We had to relocate the bow lights because the old location was used for support of the outboard end of the platform.

Finally it was time to add the hardware and install it on the boat. That’s a pretty straightforward task, but you’d be surprised how sealing all the holes with marine goop can complicate (or at least make a mess of) things. I like BoatLife’s LifeSeal for this task. [links]

When we left off, I was fabricating a platform to fit where the lid for the anchor locker is. There’s a recessed gutter around the opening that’s ideal for a trapezoidal frame that supports the platform.
