first you have to remove the 2 hose clamps and all the hoses that are connected to the heat exchanger. The pull it up and out.

Also for correct parts and service procedures it all goes by engine serial or if working on the drives that serial number as well. Very good idea to know these serial numbers when looking for info.

To backflush . . With a closed cooling system you can disconnect the raw water input hose at the heat exchanger and the hose on the outlet side of the sea water pump. Then force lots of water down the hose that you disconnected from heat exchanger, which essentially reverses the normal flow of water leading from the sea water pump to the heat exchanger. This should dislodge and clear out anything that is stuck in the 2 inline coolers that are between the sea water pump and the heat exchanger. [links]

below was my temp running for about 30 minutes. It stayed constant there. but would jump to a about 195 if I went to an idle. then back down to 180ish+ half throttle. more

Timeline:
bought boat September 2017.
ran boat handful of times.
honestly didnt pay close attention to temp guage
but I know it was in 160 to 180 range
had it winterized
shop told me I'd need sea water pump or impeller next year
I'm pretty certain they guage it by starboard exhaust not pumping out enough water.
spring 2018, pump housing fine, replaced impeller and thermostat- same.shop
and of course. not paying close attention. 3rd trip out. someone stops me on water and says my port exhaust is pumping alot more than my starboard
I start watching the temp guage religiously
it stays a hair above 180 running normal throttle
it jumps to shy under 200 at idle here

starboard thru hull exhaust has just a small steady stream. when port exhaust is spitting out a lot.

A 'half' closed cooling system cools just the engine block with the closed system the exhaust manifolds and elbows are cooled with raw water. here

This part supersedes the 511088 and 511088A. There are differences between all of the heat exchangers. [links]

I replaced mine on my 2003 496 when I cleverly picked up enough silt to take out the impellor, and pulled the ends off the heat exchanger to make sure it wasn't clogged. [links]

If you're talking about the heat exchanger end plates, they're held on by the bolt in the center. There's a flat rubber gasket and an o-ring behind each end plate. I don't think it's a common problem, I've never heard of any leaking before, but they are easy to replace, just remove the bolt. more

The little blue plugs at the top of the motor are where you release the pressure on the air-operated engine water drain system. There should also be a little blue air pump clipped onto the motor a little below them. here

You pump air into the schrader (tire) valve next to the blue release valves with the pump. After the water drains out of your motor you press the little blue buttons to release the air and close the drains. here

ORCA Marine Cooling Systems has been manufacturing high quality marine heat exchangers and cooling systems since 1973. Our kits include everything needed to convert a raw water cooled engine to a long lasting treated water system which can be easily installed, even when a boat is in the water.

Matching of heat exchangers and system kits to the exact requirements of a particular engine has been a hallmark of ORCA Marine Cooling Systems' offerings. We can custom design to virtually any boat cooling system requirement. We also produce replacement heat exchangers for a wide range of marine engines, and several lines of general purpose exchangers.
