I did not like that location for a battery. So I removed it and placed six golf cart batteries in the forward, starboard side of the lazarette. I ended up with a ptretty good list to port. Recently I replaced the 8D start batteries with two group 31s. I installed them in a box on the aft, starboard side of the lazarette. This really helped the list, but it's not fully gone. Eventually I will replace the flooded, 6V batteries with AGMs. At that point I may move all or some of them to the location the old 8D house battery was in.

Tony - Did you replace the 8D battery that you took out from the starboard side? Does it still have a list with an empty holding tank? [links]

So I went with the electroscan and salt feed. [links]

The Purasan EX is a flow through system which means that the toilet is connected to the tank and the tank is connected to the thru-hull. With each flush of the toilet the waste enters the tank where a small amount of disinfectant is introduced to neutralize the waste. At the same time an equal amount of treated waste is forced out of the tank and overboard. [links]

Raritan's onboard sewage treatment device is legal for use in any area not considered a Federal NDZ. It neutralizes waste, making it sanitary and safe for boaters and marine life. Great design for all toilets in salt, fresh or brackish water.

I finally had enough of the complaints from my dock neighbors and got brave enough to work on the issue. I carefully took the wall panneling off where I thought the house was located, which was surprisingly easy. After seeing what I was working with, I next went to Lowes and bought some supplies to build my own maintainable carbon canister. I built my own because the stupid ones the stores want you to buy cost $75 and are a 1-and-done deal. [links]

From the time I bought my boat in Fall 2011 to this past summer, I'd clear the dock any time I'd flush my toilets. I was told I needed to replace the exhaust filter (aka fart filter) for my black water tank, but my boat's builder didn't install one nor did they make the hose accessible to work on.

Pictured here is what I built for around $30. All it is is hardened PVC pipe, a couple of hose barbs, a few fittings to form a chamber, and aquarium filter media with activated carbon. Since I installed this, problem has been GONE! What's more, the guest cabin no longer has a musty odor that plagued the boat for years. [links]
