In 1939, Carl Kiekhaefer purchased a small outboard motor company in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. Included with the purchase of this company were 300 defective and inoperable engines, so Kiekhaefer and his team got to work rebuilding them. When the engines were brought back to life, they were sold to a mail-order company called Montgomery Ward who’d promptly placed a second order. This was the beginning of Mercury Marine. Although there is no business connection to the Ford Motor Company, the Mercury name was intentionally lifted from them in order to ride the coattails of the popularity and success of Ford’s Mercury brand of cars. Today, Mercury Marine is a leading supplier of marine engines, sterndrives, inboard and outboard motors, competition boat racing engines, and snowmobiles. Mercury Marine is also a partner with General Motors. In 1986, using designs by Lotus Engineering, General Motors and Mercury Marine created the LT-5 V8 engine; the dual overhead cam V8 that provides the muscle that motivates the legendary 1990-1995 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1. Mercury Marine currently produces a line of performance marine engines based off of the generation 4 small-block V8 architecture known as the LS series of GM engines. For brand new, OEM-spec aftermarket replacement alternators for Mercury Marine engines, alternators for Mercury Marine engines, Mercury Marine outboard alternators, and alternator for Mercury outboard, shop Discount Starter & Alternator. Don't let a faulty alternator ruin your fun on the water. Learn how to test alternator voltage by clicking this link: How to Check an Alternator.
An alternator is an electrical generator that converts mechanical energy into electricity VIA alternating current. The first alternator was invented in 1890 and by the 1960s, they found their way into cars and trucks, supplanting the old DC dynamo generator. Marine alternators are constructed in a similar fashion to the automotive grade alternator, with the notable exception of marine alternators being shielded from moisture and salt spray. Not only is water bad for electrical components, the salt in the ocean air and seawater is highly corrosive to metal, such as the copper innards of an alternator. Marine alternators also differ from automotive alternators by incorporating such marine-specific features including spark screens, double insulation, corrosion-resistant metals and coatings, battery-sensing regulators, and durable enclosed compartments. Discount Starter & Alternator specializes in brand new, aftermarket replacement alternators for inboard engines, outboard motors, sterndrives, and marine engines.
