San Francisco is home to the 34th America's Cup. Over 161 years old, the America's Cup has evolved into one of the world's leading sport competitions - featuring the best sailors on the world's fastest boats, the wing sailed AC72 catamaran. This will be the first time the America's Cup has been hosted in the United States since 1995.
One of the most fiercely competitive and sought after trophies in all of sport, the America’s Cup was first raced in 1851, 45 years before the modern Olympics. The U.S. yacht America won, giving the international sailing competition its name.
September 25, 2012 — Despite its long maritime history, San Francisco has never seen sailing quite like the America’s Cup World Series Races held on the bay in August. The city is now looking forward to the event’s return in October, with bigger boats and more races coming in 2013.
Sailing fast is easy, maintaining control is critical, and the physical challenge imposed on the athletes is immense. The boats are wing-sailed catamarans, capable of sailing at twice the wind speed.
The first America’s Cup World Series event in San Francisco was hailed as a success by Mayor Edwin M. Lee, who presented the prizes to the top three crews in the Match Racing and Fleet Racing Championships. here
Tom Slingsby, the tactician of Oracle Team USA 17 - the 72-foot racing yacht - said the flip occurred in stiff winds of about 24 knots as he and the rest of the crew were "pushing the limits of the boat." Tuesday marked the eighth time the crew had taken the craft onto the water since its August launch. here
"It was pretty scary, I guess," the matter-of-fact Australian, who won a gold medal in sailing at the London Olympics, said at Pier 80 after being brought back from the wreckage by boat. "We've been pushing the boat harder every day, and I guess we found our limit today." here
On the AC72's first voyage, the centerboard broke off and the boat was idled two weeks for repairs. [links]
Slingsby said the wing - the long, mast-like apparatus at the center that looks like the wing of an airplane and catches the wind - was destroyed. here
U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Joshua Dykman said no one was hurt in the incident and that the 11-member crew did not require outside rescue assistance. here

For 2011-12:
Three venues (Cascais, Plymouth, and San Diego) were announced for 2011 as of June 2, with three more (Newport, Venice, and Naples) named in late summer. Up to eight ACWS regattas were expected in each season, and potential events were under discussion in Australia, New Zealand, or even China, but logistics and funding were not sorted out in time to include those events in the 2011-12 season, leaving a total of six ACWS Regattas for the season. here
For 2012-13:
A total of three events are slated for San Francisco and Naples.
