Heinz,

The slower charge will saturate the battery's cells with voltage more thoroughly because the lower current allows the chemical reaction to take place. A higher current is good for a quick boost if you just need a little extra umph to turn the motor over faster. more

On the 12 amp charging setting, the needle will settle at around 6 amps, or just under. This is showing that the battery is fully charged. On the 2 amp setting, the needle will settle near the end of the small red triangle. here

Before we can use the amp meter on the battery charger, we first need to connect the charger to your battery. That seems simple enough, but there are some precautions you need to take. The steps below are the safest method for connecting your battery charger: here

Maintaining your vehicle battery is important, and being able to read a battery charger amp meter can help. here

The image above relates to a charger with two charging rates, 2 amp and 12 amp. here

The amp meter on your battery charger has several sets of numbers. Let’s go through the gauge shown in the image below, one at a time.

The small gap we saw between the two batteries in the first test widened with spade bits, 3.59 seconds to 4.00 seconds. here

As the amount of power required continued to increase with the new bit, the gap continued to widen between the two batteries’ drilling speeds. The 5.0Ah battery took 10.28 seconds while the 2.0Ah pack needed 12.08 seconds. here

We stuck with the same material while switching to 1-inch Bosch Daredevil Spade Bits for the next test. These don’t drill as smoothly and they require a bit more power than the auger bits. Even so, we could still easily drill at high speed. here

When we moved into low-speed testing, we also switched over to a pair of untreated 2 x 4s for our material. We started with a 1 1/2-inch Milwaukee Switchblade Self-Feed Bit. here

It’s a similar story when you test runtime. In theory, a 4.0Ah battery should give you exactly twice the runtime of a 2.0Ah battery. However, you actually get a bit more than that. We found that amp-hours affect runtime in a big way.

Some battery chargers are advertised with up to three different amperage ratings like “2/10/50”. The 2 and the 10 are the actual “charging” amps, and the 50 is only an assist feature to help a weak battery start an engine. It should be used as a “jump-start” and not as a charge. [links]

Key takeaway: A 2 Amp charger will be safer, especially for smaller car batteries, but can take a full day or more to charge. A 10-amp charger is starting to get on the high side for most small to mid-range car batteries but can be used to ensure a faster charge as long as you monitor the state of your battery for safety during the charging process. Regardless I have a table here that will give you a good ballpark estimate of how many amp hours your battery is rated at just by looking at the cold-cranking amps or the reserve capacity number that is on the sticker on top of your battery.

Now that you have seen the estimated amp hours of most car batteries here on the table, you can easily see that 10% or less for most car batteries is going to be in the 2-amp to the 7.5-amp range.

I haven’t had to do this to a vehicle battery, but I have done this method with a vehicle battery to give a slight boost to a lawnmower battery in order to get a charger started and it worked just fine.

If you hook up your charger to your battery and it refuses to start the charging process, this is not due to you having insufficient amps or too many and your charger.
