For most of the 20th century a ketch rig was a mark of a serious large sailing yacht (see our full article on sailing boats and their rigs) and the envy of many owners of smaller sloop rigged vessels. A key attraction was that splitting the sail plan into smaller units made a lot of sense on boats over 35ft in the days before modern efficient and sophisticated sail handling systems

Hallberg-Rassy is the number one brand most sailors dream of. A Hallberg-Rassy is your dream yacht within reach. Hallberg-Rassy, built in Sweden, has always meant good comfort combined with easy handling. "There is no need to be soaking wet to enjoy sailing". A Hallberg-Rassy is synonymous with sturdy construction, a well protected cockpit, nice woodwork, a powerful engine with big tankage. The looks of a Hallberg-Rassy evolves with the years and still you can immediately recognize a Hallberg-Rassy as a Hallberg-Rassy, even on a distance, no matter if it is a new boat, or decades old. A Hallberg-Rassy never goes out of style. Hallberg-Rassy yachts have style; their own. Hallberg-Rassy has always stayed true to this concept and has never tried to do anything but blue water cruisers. That is why you find and easily recognize a Hallberg-Rassy no matter which part of the world you go to. here

Wood can work, but it takes a lot of work, skill, and dedication.

The bottom line is that I know a lot of people who own a steel boat, or have done so in the past, but I have never met anyone who has owned a second steel boat. here

There’s another big problem with wood. If we find say a rotten stern post, or any other structural member after purchase, the skills and time to replace it are prodigious. Heck, just replacing a single plank in a way that will actually be watertight takes great skill and perseverance. Way beyond practical DIY for most of us. And I have seen professional replacement of just a few rotten members in a wooden boat cost over US$100,000. more

We will not even be looking at boats made of steel or wood—not quite true, we might consider a good wood epoxy saturation build—and that’s also our advice to most of you.

Like all Kraken yachts and in addition to the trademarked ZERO keel, the Kraken 50 is constructed with a full-length, reinforced skeg that is also an integral part of the hull moulding. This is an essential feature for world cruising yachts, protecting the rudder against an increasing number of dangerous UFOs (unidentified floating objects) such as shipping containers, that litter the world’s oceans and protecting the rudder during grounding. Very few modern 50 ft yachts have skegs and their rudders are therefore unprotected – in the event of collision or rudder grounding, dire consequences can result. here
