As you can imagine, visiting St. Barts puts a fairly big dent in the ol’ savings account, and when you compare the basic cost of living to that of its neighbors, it can start to look pretty astronomical (though you can offset some of the expense by sleeping onboard your cruising vessel). For those of you who can swing the budget, cruising to Saint Barthelemy will leave you feeling like you’ve discovered your own patch of paradise.

Both islands are steeped in history, and their must-see sights tend to be focused around their colonial heritage. On the island of Antigua, Nelson's Dockyard boasts a ritzy yacht-filled marina and, nearby, the Dockyard Museum tells the historic tale of Admiral Horatio Nelson who made a base here in the late 18th Century. here

Perched between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, these two islands make up a single Commonwealth nation, known best for its sugar-white beaches lined with coral reefs and lush inland rainforests. When your ship pulls into St. John's Port, you'll be greeted by colorful buildings perched along the water's edge. [links]

This paradise is one of the cheapest Caribbean islands because of it’s large local population – which means there’s accommodation and food options to suit all budgets. Plus there’s cheap public infrastructure and transport too.

These two little-known islands, that make up part of the Netherlands Antilles, are often grouped with the better-known Aruba. However Aruba can be pricey, while these two are cheaper and have less tourists. In fact in Bonaire – population around 20,000 – you will struggle to find any hotel resorts at all! That is a rarity in the Caribbean. more

The island of St Martin (or St Maarten) is a great destination to start exploring the eastern side of the Caribbean. It’s divided roughly down the middle between the French Republic and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and so it offers visitors a two-nation vacation. The Dutch side of the island is known as the party side for hosting the Heineken Regatta, a four-day sailing race with concerts and other festivities. Meanwhile, in true French fashion, the other side of the island features quaint, romantic restaurants, designer boutiques and nude beaches.

St Martin is famed for its white-sand beaches but there’s one that stands out from the rest. Maho Beach, which lies near the airport, is where tourists come to photograph planes passing just feet above their heads as they swoop in to land. If you prefer natural wonders, catch the ferry to Pinel Island in St Martin’s Nature Reserve, where you’ll find palm-fringed sands and shallow waters ideal for snorkeling. To learn about the island’s Dutch heritage, take a trip to Fort Amsterdam near Philipsburg. Here, you can explore the ruins of this former military base and take in sweeping hilltop views. here
